INDIANOLA MEMORIAL DAY HEROES - "Some Gave All"

1st Lt. Quitman Charles Walker
June 21, 1919 – November 19, 1944

Quitman Walker was born June 21, 1919 in Tillman, Miss. and went to the public schools in Indianola, Miss. His last year of high school was spent at the Cohoma County Training School near Clarksdale.

After his high school graduation in 1937, Walker continued his education at Alcorn A&M College, now Alcorn State University, and in 1941 received a bachelor’s degree in Science. He left for California to find a job, but ended up enlisting in the U.S. Army on April 25, 1942

Following his graduation from Advance Flying Training at TAAF, he was assigned to the 332nd Fighter Group, 301st Fighter Squadron on February 1, 1943 which was still at TAAF. The 332nd FG was transferred to Selfridge Field, Michigan on March 19,1943. While assigned to the 301st FS In November 1943 he was found professionally disqualified from all flying duties requiring participation in regular and frequent aerial flights and subsequently he was transferred to the 553rd Fighter Squadron at Selfridge Field, MI on November 17, 1943 and later to Walterboro Army Air Field on May 6, 1944 with the 553rd Fighter Squadron.
On August 2, 1944 he was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron as a replacement pilot at Ramitelli, Airfield, Italy. He flew the P-51 Mustang for three months from August 1944 to November 1944 during which time he flew 29 combat mission.

His 29th mission would prove to be his last when the 332nd Fighter Group was sent on a strafing mission in Hungary and Austria on Nov. 19, 1944. Pilots from the 99th Fighter Squadron destroyed 15 horse-drawn vehicles and wagons, and damaged 100 more horse-drawn vehicles, two locomotives, 40 wagons and 10 trucks. During a pass over a river, Lt. Roger B. Gaiter’s P-51 Mustang was hit by anti-aircraft fire, and was shot down. On the way back to Ramitelli, Walker’s plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire near Lake Balaton, Hungary.

Last night we honored Mr. Charles McClatchy of the Indianola Cemetery, Mrs. Ruthie Hamilton of Indianola Public Works and Assistant Chief Bill Alford of the Indianola Fire Department.
