Every year, I take a few days away from work to help lead Gurmat Camps because they are an important investment in our Sikh community and our future generations. These camps provide children with the opportunity to learn about their faith, embrace their identity, and move through the world with confidence, pride, and a strong sense of belonging.

Many of the children who attend these camps are students in our FT schools. Over the years, I have built lasting relationships with these youth and their families, not only as a Gurmat Camp leader and teacher with the Guru Nanak Sikh Academy, but also through my work as a social worker, therapist and community aid worker. I have supported students in navigating challenges such as bullying, helped parents advocate for and support their children, and guided families as they prepare for life after high school.

My connection to our school system spans decades. I have experienced it as a student, worked within it as an IA and teacher, and now continue supporting children and families as a clinical social worker. Beyond the classroom, I remain committed to serving our community through initiatives such as our weekly meal-packing program for unhoused neighbors and the distribution of free feminine hygiene products. My work has always centered on empowering children, strengthening families, and ensuring our community has the support and resources needed to thrive.

Join me near Thompson Crossing to cook, share a meal, and pack kits for our neighbors, all while we discuss the future of Franklin Township Schools.

As a licensed social worker and Umeed organizer, I’m bringing this work home to address the intersectional challenges our students and families face. Let’s break bread together and build a stronger, more supported district.

Let’s take a closer look at our schools and the people who make them run. During my last conversation about the Superintendent’s salary, I received a lot of criticism. This time, I want to broaden the discussion and look at the bigger picture, including how leadership compensation compares with the salaries of the teachers, staff, and employees who are working directly with our students every day.

As I continue my campaign for school board, I believe our community deserves transparency, thoughtful conversations, and a clear understanding of how we prioritize the resources entrusted to our schools. Every role matters, and we need to make sure our investments reflect what matters most: supporting our students, educators, and school communities.

Are we expecting superhuman output from exhausted people?

This week, we are looking directly at staffing ratios and budgets in FTCSC. In Township schools, we too often see executives hoarding resources and salaries at the top, while frontline staff dealing directly with our children are drowning.

When a single counselor is managing 300 to over 700 students, or one high school psychologist is responsible for 3,400 students, proactive support is mathematically impossible. It’s unfair to expect exhausted staff, many working second jobs to make ends meet, to find the time and money to go back for a Master's degree just to climb a lower pay scale.

We need a system that supports the people who support our kids. By investing in dedicated school social workers, we build an ecosystem of care. Social workers address basic needs like food, stable housing, and clothes, so our students can manage their mental health and actually focus on learning.

If we care about the basic needs of our kids, we have to care about the people on the frontlines.

A special thank you to Anna at Heirloom Creative Strategies. It all started with one message that basically said, “Hey Anna, I want to run in the township that raised me and taught me so much about clinical social work, education, and mental health.”

Without missing a beat, she replied, “What colors do you like? Send me some inspiration photos.”

I was sitting at my parents’ house this week, thinking about the exhausting cycle so many of our students are caught up in today; the exact same cycle of burnout and busywork I experienced growing up.

We are asking students to sacrifice their mental health for a bloated resume. We are asking parents to carry the weight of a demanding system while draining themselves just to make a “livable” wage. And we are asking our frontline workers to hold it all together without the compensation or resources they deserve.

We can’t blame parents, and we can’t blame teachers. The blame lies with a system that prioritizes checking boxes and tech-heavy infrastructure over genuine opportunities and local resources. We’ve already see what happens when massive tech moves in; we can’t let our schools become the backdoor that drains our community’s funding and water tables.

It’s time to demand a system that actually prepares our kids for the real world.
