Watching the world change from 18,200 feet.
November 4thโs election will be the most consequential in a generation. The next two years will set the foundation for the next 20. If we donโt get it right, we wonโt recognize our Valley in 2034 when the world descends upon us for the Olympics.
Will our future be a built-out Valley with little open space? Will it maintain its rural character? Will young families be able to afford to live here? What can we do today to protect our cherished lifestyle, our water, our agriculture, and our way of life?
In November 2012 I had the unique privilege to reflect on changing landscapes with the legendary American mountaineer David Breashears. Perched at 18,200 feet over the vast Ngozumpa glacier at the foot of Nepalโs Cho Oyo (worldโs 6th highest peak at 26,864 feet), David and I discussed the inevitable march of time and whether individuals could make a real difference in their communityโs future. We both believed folks can do so, if they have vision and commitment.
David through his nonprofit Glacierworks was taking giga-pixel imagery of the retreating Himalayan glaciers to compare with historical pictures to determine rate of melt. I had just retired from the Air Force and worked above 16,000 feet for over a month assisting University of Colorado researchers doing critical Science on Nepalโs rapidly melting high-altitude glaciers.
Weโre at a crossroads. We can now define our Valleyโs future. Creating a functioning city is incredibly hard work. Creating and adopting the right land-use ordinances is fundamental to our future. Fostering options for large landowners is critical.
On November 4th, I urge you to vote for the mayoral and councilmember candidates that have the Talent (knowledge, skills and experience), Temperament (ability to effectively work with others), and Time (20-30 hours / week) to โget it rightโ in the first two years. Consider which have accomplished hard things in their professional lives, because creating a city from nothing is no small task.
David, an American mountaineering pioneer, summited Mt Everest 5 times and created the IMAX film โEverestโ. He passed away in 2024. Learn more here: Mount Everest Filmmaker David Breashears Dies at 68
