Shame on them! Shame on the Huntington Beach City Council for choosing an operator of a semi-nude bar over elementary school children. Four members of the Huntington Beach City Council voted to support granting Distractions Lounge a full liquor license just 560 feet from Westmont Elementary School. Only council members Williams and Gruel voted to protect and defend the safety of the school children. Despite testimony from community members, school advocates, and neighbors, public safety concerns were ignored. The council majority of Burns, Kennedy, McKeon, and Twining sided with the poorly run business. As Ocean View School District president, I stated, Westmont Elementary is already uniquely impacted by multiple nearby bars. Yet the council voted to make that situation worse. According to testimony presented during the appeal, Distractions Lounge has been associated with calls for public drunkenness, assaults, DUIs, weapons incidents, drinking spiking, and multiple rapes. Neighbors and community members raised concerns about police activity, and disturbances. Trustees Keri Gorsage and I spoke in support of the appeal and urged the council to put students, families, and public safety first. We asked a simple question, has the applicant demonstrated that expanding this liquor license will improve conditions in the area? The answer presented by opponents was clearly no. Instead of acknowledging the legitimate concerns raised about placing expanded alcohol sales so close to an elementary school, Council Members Kennedy and Twining downplayed the potential dangers to children and the surrounding community. The City’s responsibility is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of residents. Children, families, and neighborhood quality of life should come before the desire to sell more alcohol. Shame on every council member who voted for this expansion and ignored the concerns of parents, residents, and school leaders. Huntington Beach families deserve better. VOTE THEM OUT THIS NOVEMBER!

RE: Update Regarding Garden Grove Toxic Chemical Situation

Good Afternoon Community,

At this time, all Ocean View School District schools and facilities remain safe and will be open on a normal schedule tomorrow. District staff continues to monitor the situation closely and remain in communication with local agencies to ensure the continued safety of our students and employees.

We recognize that some OVSD families may be directly impacted by evacuation orders. If your family has been affected and requires support or flexibility, please contact your school office so we can assist.

As always, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. Should conditions change, we will communicate updates promptly.

Thank you for your partnership, care, and support of one another during times like these.

Tomorrow, Sunday, May 17th, I’m proud to host a meet and greet in Huntington Beach at Aosa Coffee for Senator Ben Allen as he works to earn your support as he runs for California Insurance Commissioner. CA families are facing serious challenges with rising insurance costs, canceled policies, and increasing instability in the insurance market. More than ever, we need strong oversight and leadership that will fight for consumers and hold insurance companies accountable. At a time when Californians are demanding accountability and real reform, Senator Allen stands out for refusing to take money from insurance corporations or PACs, proving his commitment is to the people of California, not the insurance industry. I hope you’ll join us for an important conversation about the future of insurance in our state and why Ben Allen is the right leader for the job.

As the Ocean View School District Board of Trustees looks toward the future, we remain committed to two important priorities: valuing the employees who serve our students every day and responsibly preserving public land for our community. In the coming months, the District will review the results of an RFP exploring the potential development of two former school sites: Sun View and Pleasant View into workforce housing, helping support the employees who make our schools strong. Just as important, any future vision must also protect precious open green space for community use and neighborhood quality of life. Strong schools require both strong employees and thoughtful stewardship of public resources. Listen in to hear my trustee comments on the matter and stay tuned for more from OVSD!

This Cinco de Mayo, I was lucky enough to be invited to Oak View by Dr. Araceli Osborn and the PTO, to the heart of Surf City, where celebrations have begun. Hundreds of residents came out to celebrate the famous Battle of Puebla that occurred in 1862 when Mexican General Zaragoza led the battle against the Second French Empire. The day is commemorated here in the USA as many immigrants from the Puebla region now reside in the USA, especially in HB. The folkloric dance troop, the Chinelos, performed with their elaborate costumes which have large face masks created to mock European colonists mainly from Spain. The HBFD and other community groups hosted tables set to educate as well as provide food including tacos, tostadas, quesadillas, burgers, pizza, raspados, and more. What a great time first and a great tome was had by all 🇲🇽!

We thank the City of Westminster for inviting us to the annual remembrance of the fall of Saigon at the Black April commemoration. Marked on April 30, 1975, the fall of Saigon signaled the end of the Vietnam War and the collapse of the Republic of Vietnam, prompting the displacement of hundreds of thousands of refugees who would go on to build new lives around the world, including here in Orange County.

At the Ocean View School District, we are proud to serve the Vietnamese American community in Westminster and Midway City, home to one of the largest Vietnamese populations outside of Vietnam. Black April remains a solemn day of remembrance, honoring the lives lost, including American service members and soldiers of the Republic of Vietnam, as well as the civilians who endured loss, separation, and hardship.

We stand in solidarity with our Vietnamese American families and community members as they reflect on this history, preserving their stories, culture, and resilience for future generations.
