👋 Meet the Commission!

The Humboldt Historic Preservation Commission works to honor our city's past while enriching its future. Preserving historic sites inspires pride, supports local businesses, and creates unique opportunities for education, tourism, and community enjoyment.

We’re looking for a fifth Commissioner - could it be you? The Commission is composed of five citizen members (must reside within Humboldt City limits) appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. Members serve in terms of three years and shall demonstrate a positive interest in historic preservation, possessing interest or expertise in architecture, architectural history, historic preservation, city planning, building rehabilitation, conservation in general or real estate.

📢 Update: Tonight’s Carnegie Library tour is being postponed to Tuesday, July 1st at 6pm due to the rain.

We didn’t want anyone to end up with muddy shoes—plus, we’re optimistic that next week will bring better weather and clearer skies! ☀️🏛️

Thanks for understanding, and we can’t wait to see you next Tuesday for a (hopefully) sunnier stroll through Humboldt’s library history!

Let’s talk limestone! 🪨

Ever noticed how many buildings in Humboldt are made from it? That’s no coincidence! When the town was being settled in the mid-to-late 1800s, limestone was (and is) everywhere—thanks to our glacial history. Early stone masons used what the land gave them, and Humboldt's local quarries (see Blocks 40 & 41 on this 1896 map!) supplied the stone that built the town.

Our historic buildings are literally made from the ground beneath our feet—how cool is that? 💛
