I want to share some information regarding two incidents that occurred on the St. Croix River Crossing last week. On Thursday afternoon, May 21, emergency services in both St. Croix County and Washington County were notified of a person who appeared to be in crisis outside the railing located on the south side of the bridge over the St. Croix River. While law enforcement was responding to the scene, that person jumped into the river.

As efforts were underway to locate the first person, who was ultimately recovered by the dive team, we were notified of a second individual in distress on the north side of the bridge, about 100 yards from the first location.

Officers from the Oak Park Heights Police Department, along with deputies from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, crossed over 4 lanes of traffic and made contact with the second person. Throughout the crisis, I observed amazing teamwork by over a dozen agencies including fire, EMS, law enforcement, and our 911 dispatchers. Despite several challenges and barriers, the teams worked seamlessly toward their shared mission. They showed this distressed person the dignity, compassion, and understanding we all deserve. After 50 minutes, the person chose to come back to the safety of those who connected with him on that bridge.

In a short span of time, these two situations had very different outcomes. Two families received very different messages. One life tragically ended, while one was able to be guided towards resources and given the opportunity to know they are seen, heard, and valued.

It does not appear these individuals knew each other. There were two people in crisis seeking the same thing that day. Ironically, because we hurried to help one, we were placed in a position to help the other.

Sometimes a conversation, a connection, or simply having someone willing to stay with you can make all the difference. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out immediately. You are not alone, and there are people who want to support you through this. Call or text the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline.

Today, on National Peace Officers Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women in law enforcement who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We owe a debt of gratitude to these heroes and their families. Honoring these brave men and women isn’t something that’s bound by our jurisdictional limits or even the borders of our state.

It was our honor to join our neighbors the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Washington DC this week to help pay tribute to the memory of retired Saint Paul Police Officer Felicia Reilly, who died from injuries she received in 2010.

Officer Reilly's name will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial alongside thousands of other fallen heroes.

We were there to welcome Officer Reilly's family, Chief Axel Henry, and many of her colleagues from the Saint Paul Police Department.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those that loved her, and she will never be forgotten.

It was a beautiful evening for a K9 demonstration with K9 Deputy Josh Pinkos with K9 Murphy and K9 Deputy Fred Mangine with K9 Ash. We would like to send a HUGE thank you to The Somerset American Legion Post 111 and the Sons of The American Legion for their amazing support and generous donation to St. Croix County K9 Unit and our four-legged K9 partners.

We are fortunate to have such amazing support, and it was a great turn out.
