Bayou City Play

Bayou City Play Bayou City Play employs a professional approach called playwork, used on adventure playgrounds and in other settings in the UK.

Bayou City Play is a group of artists, librarians, and therapists, who partner with organizations to support and improve play opportunities for Houston area children. Since 2014 we have collaborated with public libraries, schools, parks, and hospitals to elevate children’s voices and culture through community gatherings and education. While play is essential to the health of individuals and commun

ities, it is often overlooked when planning children's initiatives and designing public spaces. We love partnering with organizations to identify barriers and work towards solutions to play deprivation.

If you find yourself in the San Antonio Zoo, don't forget to go to the southeast corner where there is a wonderful play space called the Nature Spot. You'll find a riverbank where kids can play in the water right next to meerkats, a shaded stream where they can gather water to use in the mud kitchen, a patch of Georgia river cane that makes for joyful exploration, and most importantly, a team of lovely people called Playleaders who are there to help and extend your children's play.

Bayou City Play had the pleasure delivering a 2-day workshop for San Antonio Zoo playleaders. As you can see, they are a creative and welcoming bunch.

We love collaborating with our home state Texas organizations to design custom trainings focused on promoting play. Reach out if you have a need!

Yesterday Houston delivered some beautiful weather, families showed up and the play happened as it so often does when we give children time, loose parts, and permission.

Let BCP know if we can support you in doing your own play sessions. We have free resources on our website, but are always happy to get an email from you too!

Overheard:
"I'm an elf. This is a house for me. My home is now in tramples. Don't worry! Tramples is a good thing. Also, only my best friend knows I'm an elf."

"My sea dragon turned into a Kraken!"

We have been digging into Houston’s adventure playground history and have posted a wonderful booklet on our website, written by Robert Hager and Neal Sarahan in 1981.

Adults have been fighting for children’s right to play in our city for decades. We hope this will inspire more. Please enjoy and share!

Houston, let's prioritize play!.

"The first-ever International Day of Play, to be observed on 11 June 2024, marks a significant milestone in efforts to preserve, promote, and prioritize playing so that all people, especially children, can reap the rewards and thrive to their full potential.

Beyond mere recreation, it is a universal language spoken by people of all ages, transcending national, cultural, and socio-economic boundaries. This shared passion fosters a sense of community and national pride.

It also fosters resilience, creativity, and innovation in individuals. For children in particular, play helps build relationships and improves control, overcome trauma, and problem-solving. It helps children develop the cognitive, physical, creative, social, and emotional skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world."
