ACTIVE SHOOTER UPDATE from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office with releasable information following the investigation:
MCSO: Update on Active Shooter Incident in Kings Colony- Arrest Made
Memorial Day Weekend Crisis Stopped by Law Enforcement
MCSO Detectives worked through the night continuing their investigation into the events that unfolded yesterday evening. Multiple witnesses who were present during the gunfire were interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
As previously reported, an individual armed with a long gun was actively firing rounds at multiple people in the neighborhood. When a large law enforcement presence arrived, the suspect retreated into his home and barricaded himself inside. Upon the arrival of the MCSO SWAT team, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Initial reports from several 911 calls indicated multiple victims; however, that information was later determined to be inaccurate. Only one individual, a 17-year-old male, sustained a gunshot wound. He was treated and released at a local hospital.
Investigation revealed the incident began as an altercation between the suspect and the 17-year-old male. The 17-year old, identified as Uziel Samano, has been charged with False Report to a Peace Officer, a misdemeanor, after it was determined that the information he initially provided to law enforcement was untruthful and hindered the investigation.
Following the altercation, the suspect began pointing his firearm at multiple individuals in the neighborhood and discharged numerous rounds in various directions. Investigators recovered approximately 31 fired shell casings from the scene, supporting the information and evidence that the suspect fired multiple rounds toward homes and residents. Witnesses reported attempting to de-escalate the situation and persuade the suspect to drop the weapon, but he continued firing.
The suspect, identified as 60-year-old Juan Ayala-Montero, was arrested and is currently in custody at the Montgomery County Jail. He is charged with Felony Deadly Conduct-Discharging a Firearm, with a bond set at $80,000. Ayala-Montero, who has a criminal history, has been previously deported from the US and also has a Federal ICE detainer in place at this time.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all responding law enforcement partners for their assistance. We will continue to provide updates as this investigation continues.
