Houstonians from all walks said goodbye to the beloved Georgia Provost this morning. A packed cathedral at Our Mother of Mercy Church heard precious memories of a life of service to the community, including to Texas Southern University. I got to know her in 2023 as we both ran for office. We will miss her. In your words, Georgia, we love you and there's nothing you can do about it!

I recently joined John Marsden and Houstons Unsolved Homicides for a day of remembrance, healing, support, and community fellowship at a family and friends picnic.

John started the group after his son Fabian was killed in 2017 to help bring justice to homicide victims, awareness to our communities, and to help fight against violence.

To lose a loved one to violence is an unimaginable tragedy. The inability to bring the perpetrator to justice can only worsen the pain. I’m grateful for John’s efforts to help support and heal.

I was also glad to connect with Bridges To Life, a restorative justice group that has impacted more than 93,000 inmates to help reduce recidivism.

I recently attended District G Houston Council Member Mary Nan Huffman’s Coffee with the Community at Common Bond in Tanglewood. The program featured HPD Chief Noe Diaz and several of his officers. These events are important ways that I can connect with community members and hear their feedback so I can better advocate for their needs. Chief Diaz said he is pleased with a recent drop in crime statistics, but always looking for ways to improve.

Important topics included:
- Homelessness and the new 419 Emancipation facility east of Downtown
- The use of Flock camera license plate readers in neighborhoods
- Squatting (occupying vacant housing units without authorization) and vandalism in area apartments.

I recently had the privilege of serving as co-emcee for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston Second Annual Youth Advocacy Town Hall. This year’s event brought together teens and local leaders for a panel-style Q&A session covering personal experiences, policy issues, and ways youth can positively shape the future.

I also presented a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Whitmire honoring Yancy Miranda Escobar, a 3-time student body president and environmental advocate, for being named the 2026 Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year.

I look forward to seeing the great things Yancy and the other youth in attendance will do to impact our community.

I joined Hello Houston last week with hosts Ernie Manouse and Michael Adkison, and human trafficking expert and founder of Hope Pyx Global, Eileen D**g, to help raise awareness ahead of the United Nations’ World Day Against Human Trafficking. With Houston ranked second in the nation for reported cases, and HPD recovering 86 trafficking victims in January alone, this is a critical issue in our community.

- Online trafficking

The groundbreaking on the new Edgewood Community Center was a happy occasion in South Park in District D recently. Community leaders, including Cynthia Pharms, have been pushing for the upgrades for quite some time. I was happy to join Mayor John Whitmire and Councilmember Carolyn Evans-Shabazz and Council Member Willie Davis to mark the occasion. Kudos to Houston Parks - HPARD Director Kenneth Allen and his staff for their hard work on the new 2,000 square-foot facility, which will feature a new indoor gym and multipurpose rooms to serve youth and seniors.

This past weekend, I joined many other Houstonians, including Mayor John Whitmire , in assisting with the annual Bread Of Life, Inc Back to School Health Fair and Food Distribution in Downtown. Together, we loaded cars with school supplies, food, and household items to help families with their school supply and everyday needs. Led by founder and Executive Director, Pastor Rudy Rasmus., Bread of Life serves Houston’s underserved in communities. The event also provided families with free health screenings, school physicals, clothing, and haircuts. It’s always a meaningful experience to see the community come together to help others.

Yesterday, I helped send off the HPD Bike Relay team on their cross-country journey to Niagara Falls, New York. The ride benefits Blood Cancer United (formerly the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society). The team of 27 riders will relay day and night, arriving at their destination Saturday at 3:00 p.m. This year they have raised over $92,000 for Blood Cancer United, whose mission is to fund life-saving blood cancer research, support patients and their families, educate the public, and advocate for access to care. This is their 45th year to go above and beyond their daily service to the city to support a worthwhile charity. Each rider will also wear dog tags emblazoned with the names of loved ones who’ve inspired their journey. Ride safely, team!
