I had the honor of attending the National Vietnam War Veterans Day Reflection Ceremony at the Houston Vietnam Veterans Memorial this morning.

The program was a powerful tribute, with moving remarks from veterans like Judy Harwell and community leaders such as Xuyên “Darren” Bùi, reminding us of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who served.

Moments like the singing of Amazing Grace and the playing of Taps brought everyone together in reflection and gratitude.

I’m grateful to Council Member Edward Pollard and the District J team for hosting such a meaningful event. Our veterans’ service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Let's RODEOHOUSTON! And how 'bout we start with one of Houston's greatest parades? So grateful to join thousands of Houstonians to celebrate one of our most iconic events--the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Nothing beats this for pageantry and heritage, year in and year out. Thanks to the Houston Police Department Mounted Patrol for their expert assistance and service year-round. See you at the rodeo! The University of Texas Longhorn Band

I was glad to join a convening of community leaders hosted at the Houston Food Bank to discuss belonging, connectedness, and the social fabric of our region. The session was led by Dr. Ruth Lopez Turley, Director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, who shared powerful findings from the Sense of Achievement, Belonging and Connectedness report.

The conversation centered on how to promote acceptance, support, and social connection to improve quality of life for Houston residents. This type of engagement is essential to build a more connected and supportive community.
Thank you to the American Leadership Forum, the Kinder Institute, the YMCA of Greater Houston, and the Houston Food Bank for bringing us together for this meaningful discussion.

Houston has so many wonderful organizations helping our less fortunate. I recently visited one such organization called Bethel's Heavenly Hands, Inc.
Located in far Southwest Houston, Bethel’s is run by President and CEO, Pastor James Lee. They serve thousands every week by providing vital resources of food and clothing to individuals and families. Clients can also get access to economic and social support services, such as job training, and family development programs, including counseling. Clothing is made accessible through Blessed Again Resale Shop and Boutique onsite. Bethel’s partners with local organizations such as the Houston Food Bank and Workforce Solutions Gulf Coast to help residents in need. I’m grateful for Bethel’s and the many organizations who help thousands of Houstonians every day.

Here are some updates you may find helpful:
-- Freezing rain is approaching sooner than expected. Travel conditions could become dangerous. If possible, minimize risk and plan to be off the roads by 9 pm Saturday.
-- Ice accumulations over the next 24 hours could be as high as 0.15 inches in some areas of Houston.
-- Centerpoint Energy expects that up to 200,000 customers in the Houston Metro area may lose power. The company expects to be able to restore power within 12 hours of an outage. They say they have staged 3,300 workers across the area to handle outages.
-- Houston Solid Waste curbside collections will be suspended Monday, January 26th. All facilities and drop-off centers will be closed, as well.
-- Many school districts have cancelled classes for Monday, including HISD, Spring Branch ISD, and Alief ISD. Check with your child's school district for the latest information.

Please be safe during this storm.

Heads up, Houston! A winter storm is on the way this weekend. Here’s how to stay safe:

- Travel: Stay off the roads if possible—ice will make driving dangerous.
- Pipes & Pets: Protect your pipes and make sure pets have warm shelter.
- Stay Warm: Dress in layers and keep heaters safe (never use grills or generators indoors).
- Check In: Look out for neighbors who may need help.
- Be Ready: Stock up on essentials, charge your devices, and follow local alerts.

City officials advise NOT to drip faucets, as this can reduce water pressure and lead to a boil water notice. Instead, open cabinet doors under sinks, wrap exposed outdoor pipes, know how to shut off your water and drain pipes if needed, and call 3-1-1 for help locating your shut-off valve.

Residents needing transportation to warming centers can request a zTrip ride by calling 3-1-1. Consider making the call on Saturday night, as roads may become icy and potentially impassable by Sunday morning.

Let’s take care of each other and stay safe, Houston!

Grateful for last night's Town Hall in Segundo Barrio in Commissioner Adrian Garcia's precinct. Harris Health proposes to take 8.9 acres of Hermann Park to expand Ben Taub Hospital. If you would like to learn more or offer your thoughts, please attend the Hermann Park Conservancy's Town Hall Wednesday night (see flyer below). Attendees will get to hear how the proposed taking would affect one of Houston's oldest and most historic parks. Houston Parks - HPARD
