A Shelter-In-Place Checklist is crucial for safety during emergencies, it ensures preparedness and a coordinated response. It helps you quickly and effectively respond to severe weather threats by minimizing potential harm.

* Everything I mentioned that should be in your Go Bag should be included in your Shelter-In-Place Kit. Go back and review that video for detailed information.

* Water (1 gallon per person per day, for drinking and sanitation, up to 7-day supply)

* Non-Perishable Food (up to a 7-day supply per person)

*Paper and Plastic eating utensils

*Manual can opener & tools

*Fire Extinguisher

*Matches (place it in a waterproof container)

*Plastic tarp and duct tape for repairs or shelters

*Personal sanitation items (garbage bags, soap, disinfectant, and paper towels)

*Toiletries

*Rain gear (sturdy shoes or boots, long pants, and gloves)

*Blankets

*Pet Supplies (food, water, medications, pet carrier, leash, and collar with ID)

I want to emphasize the importance of checking on your elderly neighbors and consider helping them prepare their Go Bag and/or Shelter-In-Place Kit. Encourage them to register with their local emergency management offices in order to receive targeted assistance during emergencies and disasters. In Houston the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry or the STEAR Program is a free registry that provides local emergency planners and emergency responders with additional information on the needs in their community.

Who Should Register?:

1. People with disabilities.
2. People who are medically fragile.
3. People with access and functional needs such as:
-People who have limited mobility.
-People who have communication barriers.
-People who require additional medical assistance during an emergency event.
-People who require transportation assistance.
-People who require personal care assistance.

Disaster Emergency Go Bag Supply Kit

Essentials you will need to pack:
* An extra set of house and car keys.
* Cash
* Contact and meeting place information along with a map or two for your family.
* Important documents sealed in a waterproof bag.
* Infant formula, diapers, and wipes if you have a little one.
* Toys, books or comfort items for the children.
* Bottled water and nonperishable snacks/food, can opener, and bottle opener.
* Portable charges for your electronics.
* Battery operated or hand-crank radio, flashlights, extra batteries, and a whistle.
* Escape tool such as Bling Sting or a multi-tool for your car (help you get out of a locked vehicle)
* Change of clothes in a waterproof bag.
* Rain gear (umbrella, poncho)
* Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, wipes or moist toilettes, soap, hand sanitizer).
* Eyeglasses, contact lenses and a copy of your prescriptions.
* First-aid supplies (bandages, antiseptic wipes, disposable gloves, at least a 14-day supply of prescription and over-the-counter medications)

This pre-packed bag saves time and stress during an evacuation and is designed to be easily carried, containing enough supplies for at least 72 hours.

Keep your bag in an easily accessible place near a door or in your vehicle. Make sure everything you put in the bag will meet your family’s needs and address any potential risks. Each family member should have their own go bag.
