Today, the University of Houston Fire Marshal Office pauses to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We honor the victims, the 343 FDNY firefighters, and the first responders who answered the call with extraordinary courage and selflessness.

We also remember the families, colleagues, and communities forever changed by that day.

May we never forget their service, their sacrifice, and the lives behind every name.

We Remember. We Honor. We Will Never Forget.

During Campus Fire Safety Month, we remember the lessons learned from the 2000 Seton Hall residence hall fire, which claimed the lives of three students and injured dozens more.

The tragedy led New Jersey to require sprinkler systems in all residence halls, regardless of age. It also reinforced a lesson that remains just as important today: never ignore a fire alarm.

Hear the alarm? Take it seriously. Get out and stay out.

Know two ways out, use the stairs, leave your belongings behind, and remain outside until authorized to return. Every alarm matters, and your response can save your life.

Welcome back, Cougars!

September is Campus Fire Safety Month, a reminder that a safe semester starts with all of us.

From classrooms and labs to offices and study spaces, everyday choices make a difference. Know your exits, keep routes clear, charge devices safely, and take every fire alarm seriously.

Students, faculty, and staff: check out the reminders in this graphic and help put safety into practice. Save this post and share it with a fellow Coog!

Move-In Day is here, Coogs! 🐾🏠🔥

As you get settled into campus housing, take a few minutes to make fire and life safety part of your move-in checklist. A safe semester starts with knowing the rules, recognizing hazards, and being ready to act if something happens.

A few reminders:

Know what is allowed in your residence hall and ask if you’re unsure.
Keep candles, incense, and other open flames out of dorm rooms.
Use power strips and electrical devices safely.
Never leave cooking unattended.
Keep hallways, exits, and room doors clear.
Never block smoke detectors, cover sprinkler heads, or hang anything from sprinklers.
Know what the fire alarm sounds like and evacuate immediately when it activates.
Learn at least two ways out and know where to meet outside.

Most importantly, look out for yourself, your roommates, and your fellow Coogs.

Be safe. Stay alert. Look out for each other. Go Coogs!

Fire safety in our residential communities starts with the people who are there every day. 🔥🏠

This week, the UH Fire Marshal’s Office trained Student Housing & Residential Life Coordinators ahead of the new academic year.

We covered fire prevention, emergency procedures, and how to respond when something isn’t right—helping staff feel prepared and confident to support students.

A safer campus takes all of us, and partnerships like this build a strong culture of prevention and readiness. 🤝🐾

Thank you to UH Student Housing & Residential Life (Student Housing & Residential Life )for prioritizing fire and life safety.
