This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, selflessness, and dedication to protecting our freedoms will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this weekend, let us also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who gave everything for our nation.

Today, Council Member Mary Nan Huffman was proud to present a City of Houston proclamation recognizing May 23, 2026 as “Evie Laskaris Checkmate for Girls Day” in honor of Evie’s incredible work empowering Houston youth through chess.

At just 11 years old during the pandemic, Evie turned her love of chess into a mission to serve others — founding CheckmateFORKids and providing free chess education, mentorship, and leadership opportunities to children across Houston. Over the past five years, she has helped inspire confidence, critical thinking, and academic growth for hundreds of students while also advocating for greater opportunities for girls in competitive chess.

Thank you, Evie, for representing the very best of Houston through your leadership, service, and commitment to empowering the next generation!
