Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness

Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness Student-led service and advocacy group focused on tackling systemic poverty and homelessness in Houston. Find out more at: coalition.rice.edu

The purpose of this organization is:

1. To develop sustainable programs providing immediate relief services to the homeless and economically disadvantaged. This may come in the form of, but is not limited to, monthly preparation and delivery of sack lunches for the homeless, hygiene kit distributions, and volunteer placements at local non-profits servicing the economically disadvantaged.

2. To

cultivate sustainable programs providing long-term reincorporation services to the homeless and economically disadvantaged. This may come in the form of, but is not limited to, serving as volunteer agents for the economically disadvantaged via resume development, job application assistance, and public housing placement support.

3. To hold educational events that provide students and community members with a more nuanced understanding of the challenges associated with homelessness, the difficulties in becoming reincorporated, innovative ideas in addressing urban poverty, and the network of services currently being offered for the economically disadvantaged in the city of Houston.

4. To serve as an incubator for creative social entrepreneurship projects geared towards the economically disadvantaged. This may come in the form of, but is not limited to, holding “Creativity in Service” competitions and offering scholarships for project ideas/implementations aimed at addressing urban poverty.

5. To collaborate with citywide non-profits and relief agencies in providing services to the homeless and economically disadvantaged of Houston, Texas.

Are you looking for a rewarding way to engage with the local Houston community? Do you enjoy working with children?

Make your afternoon count! Join Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness to pack yummy sandwiches and lunch packs to donate to a local shelter with local middle schoolers! Transportation will be provided.

Our first session this semester will be this Friday, January 23rd from 3:45 - 5:00 PM at Lanier Middle School. Please email Cedric at [email protected] with any questions.
