Meet George, Bill, and Spot! 🤝
These three handsome guys are white-tailed deer, New Jersey's native deer species. So why don't they look like the deer you've seen? They're leucistic! This condition is often confused with albinism. For albino animals, cells cannot produce melanin, the pigment responsible for dark coloration. So, an albino animal completely lacks dark pigmentation, and there are no "partial" albinos because all cells are affected equally. For a leucistic animal, all pigmentation is affected, not just melanin. Additionally, each cell may produce different amounts of pigmentation. This will manifest as an entirely white coat or a patchy coat, known as pie-bald, hence George, Bill, and Spot's unique coloration!
