Say hello to our three adorable new K9 prospects!

We are hard at work mentoring and guiding our new K9 team candidates.

Welcome Sammi & Sedar (Vizla), Amanda & Rocky (Labrador), and Gillian & Mochi (Corgi).

All three K9s (and their handlers!) have already demonstrated that they've got what it takes to learn the job. Follow along with us on their journey as they learn, grow, and become true working dogs.

Rocky cliffs? Yep. Rivers? Absolutely. Night-time blind searches? You bet!

Our certified K9 team has been hard at work, tackling a variety of challenging training scenarios to keep their skills sharp and stay mission-ready. Check out this compilation of some of our recent trainings, featuring plenty of obstacles, challenges, and, of course, fun along the way!

At the end of September, our team participated in a mock search exercise that brought together Incident Command, our UAV (drone) team, K9s, and ground searchers.

The scenario provided an opportunity for our teams to work together, practice communication and coordination, and strengthen our skills in a realistic search environment.

The exercise concluded with a litter carry scenario, giving team members valuable hands on experience with patient transport and teamwork in the field.

A big thank you to Jenna & Wes for leading and organizing the training, the property owner for sharing their property, and our two volunteer "hiders" who made the training possible!

Our Drone Pilot and team leadership member, Leo, recently led an essential cold weather preparedness training for Superior Search & Rescue members.

The hands-on training covered everything from what to carry in your pack and how to properly layer clothing to building a cold-weather shelter, self-rescue after falling through ice, and tying a rescue wrap for someone found in cold conditions.

This comprehensive training drew on Leo’s years of experience as a member of Superior Search & Rescue, providing our team with practical skills that can make a critical difference during winter searches and emergencies.

Thank you, Leo, for sharing your knowledge and helping keep our team prepared for the challenges of cold-weather search and rescue!

Training leadership member Jenna put the team to the test once again with a challenging 6+ mile hike of Mount Baldy!

Along the way, members faced five challenges designed to test pack preparedness, teamwork, problem solving, and outdoor skills. It was Orange Team versus Black Team, and in the end, Black Team took home the gold!

Challenges included building shelters large enough to fit the entire team, including our working K9s and guest pups, practicing wound care using the necessary materials, and more.

A huge thank you to Jenna for putting together another fun, challenging, and valuable training!

Our SAR leadership and members came together to share knowledge and support incoming students through a presentation on who we are, along with Outdoor Safety and preparedness.

Over the course of three days, we delivered two presentations each day for a total of six presentations. Each presentation reached 70 to 90 incoming freshmen at Michigan Technological University.

A huge thank you to Jenna, Isaac, Keith, Sam, Maria, and Paige for taking the time to present and share this invaluable knowledge with the next generation of students. We are proud to support our community and help others stay safe and prepared in the outdoors!

This month, our drone pilots and K9 teams put their skills to the test across a mix of open and wooded terrain.
We even got the kids in on the fun as our tiniest and mightiest volunteer hiders!

Trailing K9s Dolly and Harlow worked on intermediate to advanced scent discrimination, while our air scent K9, Paavo, picked up the pace as he searched for his target. Drone pilots, Leo and Lane, provided aerial views of volunteer hiders, and our next potential K9, Sedar, got in some puppy runs to show us what he’s got!

A huge thank you to Leo and his family for sharing their awesome property with our team. The training was collaborative, successful, and incredibly rewarding.

Best of all, we finished just three minutes before the thunderstorm arrived!

We were excited to welcome Lauren from the Keweenaw Community Foundation to join our K9 team for a training day!

This visit was especially meaningful because KCF recently awarded our K9 team funding for portable AC units for our vehicles. These units will help keep our K9s safe and comfortable during trainings, events, and deployments, especially during the hot summer months when heat can be one of the greatest risks to working dogs in the field.

Lauren also captured some incredible professional photos of our K9s while she was here!

A huge thank you to the Keweenaw Community Foundation and to everyone who continues to support our K9 team, whether you have helped by hiding for a training search, flanking, donating, or even writing a letter of support. Every bit of support helps keep our dogs and handlers ready to serve our community!

This past week, team leadership member, Wes, led our team through a training session focused on pack essentials.

We discussed what should be included in a pack for a shorter search versus what’s needed for a 72+ hour deployment, as well as the importance of adjusting gear and clothing with the changing seasons.

Being prepared means having the right equipment for the mission, the conditions, and the amount of time we may be in the field.
