This morning, we gathered along Hillsdale Avenue near the train station and Veterans Park to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, 25 years ago today.

We honor those we lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and all those whose lives were forever changed.

We will never forget.

As another season at Stonybrook Swim Club comes to a close, I figured this picture from my time on the Pool Commission in 2025 was appropriate. My son is appropriately covering his face šŸ˜†

Despite a very rainy summer, Stonybrook is wrapping up another strong season. Through August 11, revenue topped $1 million, expenses were running well below budget, and the pool remains 100% self-sustaining from an operating standpoint, with no taxpayer dollars allocated toward its annual operations.

There are still challenges to work through, including maintenance of the competition pool and improving Wi-Fi and connectivity (both discussed at the recent meeting), but programming remained strong and demand for the facility continues to be high.

I put together a little more detail from my latest Stonybrook Pool Commission liaison report for anyone interested. It was presented to council at the Sept 1st meeting.

This is the most amazing story I’ve heard since joining the Hillsdale Council. We have incredible emergency responders, and Hillsdale is in very good hands. Congratulations to everyone involved, and welcome to Hillsdale, Marshall!

Hillsdale Residents, lots of activity slated for tonight's council meeting. We will be recognizing Police and Volunteer Ambulence / EMS crews. The Economic Development Committee will be presenting their findings from the town-wide survey that went out this summer. I love working with data and am sure there will be a lot of super interesting insights collected from our more than 1,100 responses.

Here's a summary of what's on tonight's agenda (public meeting starts at 7:00 PM at Borough Hall):

• Recognition of Hillsdale Police officers and our Volunteer Ambulance / EMS members, with Mayor Sheinfield and Police Chief Travis Woods.
• A presentation from the Economic Development Committee on its community survey, along with a downtown investigation study — early groundwork on the future of our business district.
• Correspondence from a resident following up on proposals for a town greenhouse.
• A $53,000 change order on the Memorial Field playground project — adding poured rubber safety surfacing under the new equipment, bringing that contract to $202,800.
• A Chapter 159 budget resolution to accept National Opioid Settlement funds.
• A resolution allowing alcohol to be served at permitted special events at Memorial Field.
• An employment agreement with Denise Kohan, plus routine consent items (2027 professional RFQs, payment of bills).
• Monthly professional and committee reports.

No ordinances up for a vote this time.

Today Hillsdale honored Joan D’Alessandro with the dedication of Joan’s Joy Legacy Lane.

It was great to see so many people, including leaders from the federal, state, and local level, come together to recognize Rosemarie and the lasting impact of the Joan’s Joy Foundation. A very special tribute, especially on Joan’s birthday.

Our new Ladder 27 has arrived!

This is a major investment in the Hillsdale Fire Department and in the safety of our community. The process to replace and upgrade this apparatus has been years in the making, so it’s great to finally see the truck here in town and in the hands of our firefighters.

It looks pretty sharp!

Back in May, I was there at Smith School when Rep Josh Gottheimer announced the Feed Our Kids Act.

With September being Hunger Action Month, it seemed worth sharing this again. Kids shouldn’t be sitting in a classroom hungry. Making sure they have something to eat and are in a position to learn just seems like common sense to me. Glad Hillsdale got to be part of the conversation.

Nearly 330,000 children in Jersey are food insecure. Let’s be clear: no child should go hungry in Jersey or anywhere in America.

That’s why I’m fighting hard with my ā€œFeed Our Kids Actā€ to make school meals free for every K-12 public school student and secure our food assistance programs. Hunger shouldn’t be a partisan issue.

Council Meeting: Tuesday, September 1

It got a little quiet here in August, I was up at the lake with family for a stretch. Back now, and back to keeping you posted on what's interesting to me at Borough Hall.

Here's what's on tomorrow's agenda (council goes into closed session at 6:00 PM; the public meeting starts at 7:00 PM at Borough Hall):

• A step forward on the new DPW building — authorizing the Borough to advertise for construction bids.
• A townwide tree-service contract — removal, trimming, and stump grinding.
• Certification of the 2025 annual audit and its corrective action plan.
• Planning Board appointment (Alternate)
• Final vote on Ordinance 26-23 — a $200,000 capital ordinance for recreation improvements, paid from the Borough's Capital Improvement Fund. It was introduced last month; the public hearing is tomorrow.
• Monthly department reports from the Borough Engineer, Police, DPW, and Fire.
