Bandit was reunited with his family today at our shelter! He was so excited to see his person that it was tough to get him to stand still for a photo. But, we eventually got Bandit's attention for split second, and we were rewarded with this pic of his sweet face.

It’s going to be hot over the next few days! Keep your pet safe with these tips:

- Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, clean drinking water and shelter. Bringing your pet indoors with you is best.

- Never leave a pet in a car. Car interiors can reach deadly temperatures in a matter of minutes even in the shade, even with the windows cracked.

- Take your dog out during the cooler parts of the day, keep walks short, and avoid asphalt if possible. If you must walk your dog on cement or asphalt, test the temperature of the surface first. If the pavement is too hot for your bare hand or foot, then it’s too hot for your dog.

- Watch for symptoms of overheating, such as difficulty breathing and weakness. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital immediately if you think your pet may be overheating.

Planning to beat the heat with a visit to a lake, river or the coast this weekend? If you’ll be taking your dog with you, take time now to learn more about where there might be dangerous algae blooms, contaminated water, rip currents, or other potential hazards like wildlife or garbage that could harm your pet.

If you’re taking your pet on a boat, keep them safer by putting them in a brightly colored life vest specifically made for animals.

View current algae bloom advisories on the Oregon Health Authority’s website: https://www.oregon.gov/oha/ph/healthyenvironments/recreation/harmfulalgaeblooms/pages/blue-greenalgaeadvisories.aspx

Thank you to the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) for this graphic about harmful algae blooms. The OVMA also has information about toxic algae on there website at https://www.oregonvma.org/toxic-algae-advisories.

In case you’re wondering… Jack was pretty quiet while at our shelter. 🤫 We loved meeting this cute senior Chihuahua, but we’re so glad we could reunite him with his family the same day he arrived at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter!

We hope the singing career works out for you, little guy! 🎤🎤🎤

As temperatures rise over the coming days, please check on friends, family and neighbors who may be vulnerable to the heat to make sure they (and their pets!) are staying cool.

Temperatures are forecasted to be more than 90°F for multiple days from Saturday through Monday. Our bodies are not used to hot weather, and this early-season heat could lead to illness. Know the signs of heat illness and what to do if you see someone with symptoms. Check in regularly with family, friends and neighbors who are vulnerable to heat, especially if they live alone, are older or don't have AC. Learn more: staycoolwashingtoncounty.com

Now is the time to start preparing pets for Fourth of July fireworks and festivities!

Make sure pets have ID, set up safe spaces/dens for cats and dogs (and help them get comfortable in those spaces now), and call your veterinarian this week if you want to discuss medication or other ideas for keeping your animals calm.

For more ideas on how to prepare, visit our Fourth of July Pet Safety page at bit.ly/4thjulypetsafety.
