Update. Renovate. Rebuild. I’m a firm believer in having solid plans with high standards that prepare for future growth. The potential for Henry County needs to be reflected in the structures that we send our kids to.

Learn By Doing

As educators can tell you, hands-on learning remains a valuable tool in the learning process. During my last years in the classroom, as a middle school geography teacher, I secured a $10,000 grant for an Ag Tech project combining experiential learning with technological innovation. The project grew, leading to a partnership with Auburn University faculty who became involved with experiments with different seeds, a 55-gallon largemouth bass aquarium, and the incubation of quail eggs—all in our classroom and later incorporated into other areas of the school. At the end of the project, I was invited to speak at the Digital Learning Conference in Austin, Texas, about the direction of Digital Learning.

Today, I’m still a proponent of experiential learning and exploring innovative ways to get achievement to the next level. The data still shows the effectiveness of “learning by doing” with teacher guidance.

As education is trying to navigate the emergence of incredible new technologies, I believe in starting with hands-on experiences guided by a teacher and then incorporating technology to enhance the experience. I believe it’s time to revisit how to incorporate a deliberate strategy for the disruptive technologies happening around us. Ultimately, use technology to enhance the learning process, not to replace it.
Don’t skip the grind.

Early in my career a veteran coach told me that I could be as tough on players and coaches as I needed to be but more importantly that they could look back on their time with me with good memories. From that point on, it stays with me to provide an environment people want to be a part of. Throughout my career I’ve been blessed to coach with and learn from good coaches and good people. One of the most important lessons I learned from them is that once you land a great hire, tell them the plan, get out of their way, and let them do their thing. Leaders understand that micromanagement and personal agendas push away strong employees. Top talent looks for opportunities and freedom to apply their expertise but also understands the mission extends beyond themselves.

I am a proud product of a blue-collar family, born and raised with the values of hard work and perseverance. Some of my strongest memories are working construction sites side-by-side with my father. Those experiences, alongside growing up working on my grandfather's and uncles' farms, taught me the true meaning of dedication and resilience.

Education has always been a family priority: my mother was a devoted educator, and other family members have also dedicated their careers to teaching and supporting students. This instilled in me a profound respect for excellent teachers who shape young lives.

Today, with over 20 years of educational experience at multiple levels, as a parent raising two children in our district's schools, and married to a dynamic educator, I bring that same work ethic and deep appreciation for great educators to the school board—committed to strong schools that prepare every student for success.
