I wrapped up another week of campaigning, this time in District 9—visiting with residents in western Sioux Falls, Wall Lake, and Hartford. Having previously represented this area in the state senate, many voters are already familiar with yours truly and my conservative record. So rather than answer questions, it allowed me to ask a few of my own.

As expected, property taxes and government spending remain front-of-mind for many or most voters. We also discussed politics, and I was surprised by the results of my un-scientific poll on the election for governor. As always, the most valuable part of the process is listening and learning directly from the people.

Next stop: District 10 in southeastern Sioux Falls.

It was a productive first week of campaigning, and I learned a lot about the people and issues of District 2. My campaign partner for this first week was Sen. Sue Peterson (R-D13).
Even though it's outside her home district, Senator Peterson volunteered to help because she is a hard worker and a loyal friend. I first met then-Rep. Peterson while serving in the State Senate, choosing her as the house sponsor of my "Truth in Sentencing" bill. Against all odds, she shepherded it through the House of Representatives, and it became Law. God knows, there aren't many people you can count on in politics, and I'm proud to know a Godly, principled person like Sen. Peterson.
Next, I'm moving on to my home district (9) of western Sioux Falls and Hartford. 😀 👍🏻

The first week of my campaign for the Minnehaha County Commission, I spent most of my time listening—meeting voters, asking questions, and learning what matters most across our county.

I conducted an informal survey, and one issue clearly stood out: property taxes, along with concerns about government spending and accountability. I answered questions about the county sales tax option and also heard about data centers, so I attended an informational session to better understand their potential impact.

It was a productive start, but there is much more to learn and many more conversations ahead before June 2, 2026. I understand the best ideas for government come not from within government but from conversations with the people we serve.

Thank you to everyone in District 2 (Sioux Falls, Brandon, Valley Springs) who took the time to visit with me.

I didn't plan on running for office again, but feel called to it and would appreciate your support. 😀🙏

As some of you know, I've been working on a book, tentatively titled "Bailey: A Wonderful Life," for the better part of two years. It's about the very-real George and Mary Bailey, the Bailey State Bank, the su***de of their son, George Bailey Jr., and how their small-town story inspired an early screenplay for the beloved film, "It's a Wonderful Life."
With the manuscript in near-final form, I've sent copies to a small group of friends, historians and editors, hoping to get critical feedback so I can improve and fine-tune the story for its audience. Thank YOU to those who have supported and encouraged me through this process. God willing, I'll finish the editing and rewrite soon and turn my attention to finding a literary agent and publisher. I'm hopeful the book will be published this fall for the 80th anniversary of "It's a Wonderful Life."
If you'd like to offer advice or insights, please feel free to reach out in a message or in comments below, and I'll follow-up with you. Thanks for your time, all the best.

This may sound trivial, perhaps even petty, but I drive past this sign at the junction of I-90 and I-29 nearly every day, and nearly every day it reminds me of what I dislike about politics.

God knows, I hold no ill will toward either politician, but I do believe principles are important. I've never understood how it is considered appropriate or even legal for the taxpaying public to finance the name recognition and reelection of incumbent politicians. It's illegal for any other politician or candidate to display a sign in the public right of way. A business has to register and pay an annual fee for the privilege. Only an incumbent politician may have an official highway sign, placed by the highway department, at taxpayer expense. Trivial as it may sound, I often shake my head or say something snarky when I pass this junction. Because that's about all I can do about it.

Maybe I’m alone in my opinion. I’d like to hear your own.
