I once met someone who was about 10 years into their career designing weapons. When I asked them how they felt about the morality of that work they explained that they didn't know any more. They had chosen that career path to reduce the amount of deaths during conflict, but they had come to believe that with fewer deaths there was an increase in conflict. They talked about a human bloodlust they had not considered.

Each year, I make a post about what we morally owe to those who have perished since they themselves cannot benefit from that repayment, but today I sit somewhat immobilized that with all I have done over the years, I have never been able to stop a conflict and all the reduced lethality of weapons we still see our soldiers dying regularly for what seems to be no purpose, so maybe they weapons designer was on to something. There is some kind of bloodlust we carry and we can't really honor our fallen if we don't address it.

I think after Tuesday's election results Democrats really have to sit with these numbers and re-think how to message in a relevant way to voters. In some ways that Democrats turned out at higher numbers than Republicans should feel great, but feels like political ennui. Josh Shapiro received about 400k more voters than Stacy Garity, but that number is over 100k fewer votes than he received in 2022. PA03 turned out about 10k more Democrats than it did in 2022, PA10 turned out about 1k more Democrats than 2022 but then PA04 turned out about 10k fewer Democrats in 2022 and PA06 turned out about 12k fewer Democrats than in 2022. Stacy Garity received about 300k more votes than the last Republican Gubernatorial candidate who ran unopposed-almost double, so the 23% in voter turnout that mail-ballots have added since COVID means that her turnout is still higher. I think in these numbers what we see is that when a candidate develops messaging that is relevant and relatable Democrats do come out, but that makes the work a little harder than regurgitating the pre-packaged campaign plans. So the real work began yesterday and I look forward to seeing you all in November.

One of the things that always bothers me about our conversations about economic development in the region is that it focuses only on capital and not people. Our region is filled with so many talented, resourceful, connected and loving people that small investments in them yields amazing outcomes. As many of you know the ELC closed with incredibly short notice. That institution had been part of my daughter's life from very early on...she has had teachers who potty trained her, made up for my shortcomings and encouraged her to be the best version of her...and when people compliment me on my parenting I have the ELC to thank for an amazing child, but what happened when news of the closing happened was just miraculous. Rep. Nathan Davidson and Commissioner Justin Douglas helped get us resources for a little more time and for after the closing. Parents helped each other fully...when the news broke, I was in D.C. unable to find replacement care and parents from the ELC really stepped up to make sure my daughter would be fine. Religious and secular institutions stepped up to increase their child care capacities to make space for us and some new daycare centers will be opening. Yesterday was bittersweet, but I will be eternally grateful to the teachers and parents who have been an integral part of my parenting journey and my daughter's life...ànd I want to reinforce that it's people who make capital valuable and multiply and not the other way around.

For York voters, we just received these instructions regarding mail-in ballots, please share broadly to ensure everyone's vote will be counted:

We identified an issue with vote-by-mail ballots that has impacted 3 voting precincts in which some voters did not receive the correct ballot.

This issue was caused by the vendor that handles the county’s ballot processing. This vendor error resulted in 237 voters receiving an incorrect vote-by-mail ballot. Below denotes the specific precincts and impact:

119 in Jackson Township 1 received a ballot for the 11th Congressional District instead of the 10th
97 in Jackson Township 1 received a ballot for the 10th Congressional District instead of the 11th
12 in Yorkana received a ballot for York Haven
9 in York Haven received a ballot for Yorkana
We are working with the vendor to notify those voters of the error and to reissue corrected ballots and instructions to all affected voters.

If the voter has not yet completed and returned the previous ballot that was sent them, they can discard it, as it is not valid.

If they have already submitted their completed ballot, that ballot will not be counted. They must submit their new, corrected ballot to have their vote counted. The York County Elections Office will ensure only the correct ballot is counted on Election Day.

If you would receive an inquiry, you can relay that the voter will be receiving notification, if they haven’t already.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this vendor error.

Since the fall of Roe v. Wade I have been struggling to choose between candidates based on their reproductive rights platform because most of them are very muddied. I have been giving this some thought and I think the challenge is a generational one, a racial one, class one and a disability one. For women who lived before Roe was passed, Roe was an increase in rights-women could now legally have abortions with government being able to intervene after the first trimester. Those who were born after Roe passed saw middle class white women not really care about who abortion was available to, accept the sterilization of women of color, women with disabilities, and poor white women because these were women they didn't perceive to be their equals and entitled to the same rights. So overtime, the movement for abortion access slowly became very narrow in its concern-it went from a right for a woman and her Dr to make a decision to the right for a woman to get the service she can afford, disregarding women who could not afford abortion and now could not even refuse sterilization, at the same time government was passing all sorts of rules to interfere with a woman's access to abortion-including, but not limited to waiting times, which hurt women who need to work and have an inflexible workplace or other familial obligation. Despite Roe's intention to increase access to abortion, it created a climate similar to what we had before-the women who could afford to leave the U.S. to get an abortion could (only now the trip was within the U.S.) and the women who couldn't had to get them under conditions that would jeopardize their health (fortunately there were medical advancements that meant that woman who would have had a physical abortion in 1985 and head straight to her factory job, could now have a medical abortion). So for women like me, the call to codify Roe or to go back to Roe rings hollow. I don't want the government (or insurance companies for that matter) involved in my medical decisions period and that is from the time I find out I am pregnant (which because of bad health care most women find out pretty close to the window Roe says they government can be involved) to the day I miscarry, or have to be induced because Drs can better care for my baby outside my womb to the day my baby is born fully healthy. How has your thinking on reproductive rights shifted since the fall of Roe? I want whoever I am electing to want more than Roe- are you satisfied with what we had in the 1960's and what we saw transpire afterwards as a result? Let me know.

EDIT: I added a photo per FB recommendation (LOL) for a wider reach because I really want to hear from folks on this.
