ENA is ENAmored with Aaron Salinas, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, for championing mental health care. Salinas was instrumental in founding the South Texas Rio Grande Valley Affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in 2025.

The new affiliate, about two years in the making, provides education, mental health advocacy and peer-to-peer support groups. Salinas, who is part of the ENA Rio Bravo Chachalacas Chapter, has an in-depth understanding of the needs in his community with experience working in pre-hospital, emergency departments and as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

This May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month, Salinas has a message for anyone experiencing mental health struggles, including nurses.

“I think, for many of us in health care, we're so used to taking care of others that many times we fail to take care of ourselves,” he said. “It can be very easy for us to get consumed in the roles that we're doing – that for many of us, we can take some of the obstacles and challenges with us once we leave or clock out of work. And we are not open to talking about these kinds of issues."

“So what do I say to people who are struggling with mental illnesses? For one, that you are not alone, that you are never alone,” he said. “Two, we need to make sure that we have the courage to talk about whatever struggles, whatever issues we're experiencing with our colleagues and that we are able to know when we need to speak to an expert, whether it be a therapist, whether it be a counselor, whether it be your primary care provider, whoever.”
