The troop had a great couple weeks. From PT tests in the rain for scouts over the weekend to a 10+ mile hike planned and organized by one of our scouts on President’s Day. Then a Cycling/Orienteering/Wilderness Survival Campout the following weekend wrapped up with our spring Court of Honor this past Monday… these scouts are really busy - and it wore out a few of them!

Great start to the October Campout. Beautiful cool evening on arrival & a propane campfire ring for the WIN Friday night as we sit listening to the boys giggling and playing games before bed.

Saturday held a couple hours fishing in the morning and a 4 mile hike in the afternoon where we picked up 5 full bags of trash as part of our Environmental Science Merit badge. Within the hike we navigated the boys to the waterfall within Chalk Ridge Falls Park… first time for most of them and everyone enjoyed the opportunity to cool off a bit. Wrapped the hike and had the chance to help a few of them learn the basics of casting a fly rod, and they’re now ready to throw out a line on their own next time! As the sun is getting low in the sky, it’s now time for supper and we’ve got two expert chefs preparing Chicken Teriyaki for the hungry bunch!

To our four young men who were recognized & received their Eagle packets back tonight; as I told you, “the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.” I’m glad to have been along your way as you’ve taken several, and I can hardly wait to see where the rest of your steps take you!

Keep up the effort, Lucas!

Day 3 has faded away and the boys are disappointed that we only have a couple days here at the ranch.

We began with a great meal followed soon after by another scout led flag ceremony which included bugle calls, something rarely seen anymore at a scout camp.

Scout activities for the day included shooting qualifications on the rifle, shotgun, and archery ranges, surface diving exercises to recover items from the bottom of the pool, cooking meals in dutch ovens and camp stoves, wilderness survival preparation hike to the top of Kyle Mountain, and building & programming robots. By mid day the camp staff had raised and lowered the garrison flag in rehearsal for family day celebrations - a wonderful thing to see and the did a remarkable job considering the amount wind at the time. For the evening, the older boys took off on a kayaking trek, the adults challenged the staff in a softball game, and younger scouts had options to either swim, watch the game, or relax in the A/C watching an evening movie. Another fun filled day, and we were ready to head to bed by 11PM, as the temperature was expected to get down into the 70’s overnight.

Day 2 is behind us and we’ve entered the, “We only have three more days here?” phase.

Tuesday was filled with:
a couple more acouts passing their swim test, basic First Aid & CPR training, learning how to change oil in a vehicle & do basic maintenance, lots of “Marco-Polo,” and our senior boys closed the day with the evening flag ceremony. For our evening troop activity we had the entire rock garden to ourselves hosted by the AMAZING climbing staff.

About a third of the troop showed up for service hours and to work on Citzenship in the Community MB today, on election day.

They met some candidates, spoke with current elected officials of several entities, enjoyed some time outdoors, and represented themselves VERY WELL to everyone they encountered.

With youth engaged in the community, the future is bright.
