TO: Individuals Interested in Apple Tree Grafting

FROM: Brad Mullins, Extension Agent, Agriculture

RE: APPLE TREE GRAFTING WORKSHOP
Thursday, April 8, 2021 – 6:00 PM
Council Community Center

The Buchanan County Extension Office in partnership with Big Sandy Soil & Water Conservation District is offering an Apple Tree Grafting workshop to be held Thursday, April 8th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Council Community Center. Masks will need to be worn and social distancing will be observed, participation will be limited to 20 due to COVID-19.

Brad Mullins, Extension Agent, will be discussing apple tree grafting and demonstrating grafting. Big Sandy SWCD will provide the first 5 rootstock. Additional rootstocks will be $1 each on a limited basis. To prepare for this workshop, here is what you need to do –

(1) You will need a sharp knife to graft apple trees so sharpen it up and bring it to the meeting.
(2) Go immediately and secure grafting wood (SELECT WATER SPROUTS FROM LAST YEAR’S GROWTH THAT ARE THE SIZE OF A WOODEN PENCIL, NO SMALLER THAN 1/4” - 3/8” IN DIAMETER. CUT THESE WATER SPROUTS ABOUT 6”-8” IN LENGTH.) Put them in a plastic bag (a bread bag is fine) and place them in the bottom of your refrigerator to keep them dormant. DO THIS IMMEDIATELY FOR ANY VARIETIES THAT YOU WANT TO GRAFT ON TO THE ROOTSTOCK.

We will have some grafting wood available for Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, etc., but be looking around for some of your favorite varieties. This is an opportunity to retain these varieties and have a productive apple crop in the future.

If you want to attend, please pre-register by calling the Big Sandy SWCD at 935-7750 or 935-7751 by Monday, April 5th to let us know you will be attending, and so that we will have an idea of the number of rootstocks to have available. If you would like to purchase rootstocks but do not need to attend the workshop, just call and let us know how many you will need. They will be available in a limited supply, so call early to reserve.

Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting.

If you are a person with a disability and desire assistance or accommodation to participate in this activity, please notify the Dickenson County Extension Office at 926-4605 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to discuss accommodations at least 5 days prior to the event. TDD number is (800) 828-1120.

As determined by the Code of Virginia, a $50 fee will be charged for all returned checks.
