Leaf and limb collection has recently been delayed due to repeated mechanical issues with the Town's backhoe.

The Town's New Holland backhoe has been in and out of service over the past year for maintenance and repairs. Most recently, the equipment was serviced in June and crews immediately resumed leaf and limb collection beginning in the Country Club area. Unfortunately, the backhoe experienced another breakdown after less than two hours of operation.

Following the breakdown, Town crews collected as much material as they safely could by hand. However, some larger piles and unique situations require equipment and could not be removed.

We understand that many residents rely on this service and we apologize for the inconvenience. Staff are currently evaluating options to improve the reliability of leaf and limb collection.

At the July 14, 2026 Town Board meeting, the Board will discuss potential equipment replacements, including the purchase of a Kubota tractor and dump trailer to support future collection efforts.

Thank you for your patience as we work to address this issue and improve service reliability.

Good Evening!

Tomorrow Morning the Town Contractors will perform another tie in. During this process, a two inch valve on Church Street will be turned off. We believe there are homes North of St. David Street that may temporarily lose water while this water line is being tied in.

If you do lose water, please inform town hall as our goal is to ultimately move all homes off of the two inch water line. This will take time to do, but the information will help us plan ahead.

Thank you for your patience as we work to finish the remaining water line tie ins.

📢 Important Tax Billing Update for Town of Grifton Property Owners

The Town of Grifton would like to inform residents that beginning next tax season, municipal property taxes will be collected by the respective county as part of a single, combined tax bill.

Property owners located in Pitt County will receive one combined tax bill from Pitt County that includes both county and Town of Grifton taxes. Likewise, property owners located in Lenoir County will receive one combined tax bill from Lenoir County that includes both county and Town of Grifton taxes.

This change is being made in an effort to streamline the tax billing and collection process, making it more convenient and efficient for taxpayers by reducing the number of separate tax bills received each year.

The amount of taxes owed to the Town of Grifton will not change as a result of this transition. The only change is that town taxes will now be included on your county tax bill.

Additional information will be shared as the implementation date approaches. If you have any questions, please contact Town Hall at 252-524-0109.
Thank you for your continued support of the Town of Grifton.

Why Is My Water Yellow After Recent Water Main Work?

As part of our recent water system improvements, sections of older galvanized and cast iron water mains were replaced with new pipe. During this work, crews had to cut into and connect to existing water mains.

Over time, naturally occurring minerals such as iron and manganese can settle on the inside of older water pipes. When a water main is cut, repaired, or when water flow patterns change, some of these mineral deposits can become disturbed and temporarily mix into the water. This can cause water to appear yellow, orange, or slightly brown.

While this discoloration can be alarming, it is typically caused by mineral particles and is not usually an indication of a water quality or health concern. The water remains safe for most household uses, although the appearance and taste may be affected until the minerals are flushed from the system.

What Should You Do?

If you notice discolored water:

Run the cold water from a faucet closest to where the water service enters your home for 10–15 minutes.
Check the water periodically to see if it clears.
Avoid washing white or light-colored laundry until the water is clear.
If the water does not clear after flushing, wait a few hours and try again, as crews may still be working to remove the disturbed minerals from the system.

What Are We Doing?

Our crews are actively flushing the water mains in the affected area to remove any remaining mineral sediment and restore normal water clarity as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your patience as we complete these important infrastructure improvements. Replacing aging water mains helps improve system reliability, water quality, and service for the long term.

If you continue to experience discolored water after flushing, please contact us at 252-524-0109.

Thank you for your understanding.
