Last week, Shannon Hill, our AAA Community Resource Specialist, had the chance to speak with the Upstate Senior Network about who we are, what we do, and the resources available through our agency.

The biggest takeaway was simple: no one organization can meet every need in our communities. The more we work together, share resources, and stay connected, the better we can serve older adults, caregivers, and families.

We’re thankful for all of our community partners and the work you do every day.

Free community activities like these can be a great resource for grandparents and relatives raising children, especially when you are looking for something fun, local, and affordable to do together.

We’re glad to share these youth programs from the Abbeville County Library System, with activities available in both Abbeville and Calhoun Falls.

Upper Savannah AAA’s Seniors Raising Children Program may also be able to support eligible grandparents and other relatives age 55+ who are raising children in their home with resources, respite, and other assistance. Today, Aug. 31, is International Overdose Awareness Day, a time to remember lives lost, support families, reduce stigma, and share information that can save lives.

For older adults, an overdose can happen accidentally and more easily than many people realize. Seniors are often taking several medications at once, their bodies may process medicines more slowly, and prescription opioids can become dangerous when combined with certain sleep, anxiety, or pain medications, or with alcohol. That is why caregivers and family members should know about naloxone, commonly known as Narcan. It can reverse an opioid overdose and save a life.

If you suspect an overdose, call 911 and give naloxone if available. Cornerstone Cares provides free Narcan at any Cornerstone office. For more information, call 864-227-1001 or visit CornerstoneCares.org.

Upper Savannah AAA shares information and community resources that can help older adults, caregivers, and families stay informed and safe. For information about Upper Savannah AAA programs and services for eligible seniors, call 864-941-8050.

Grief does not follow a schedule, and support can look different for everyone. We’re sharing this message from Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont because grief support is an important community resource, especially for caregivers and families who may be adjusting after the loss of someone they cared for.

Caregiving does not simply end when a loved one passes away. For many people, grief also means adjusting to a major change in routine, responsibility, and daily life.

Upper Savannah AAA helps connect older adults, caregivers, and families with resources throughout our six-county region, including support that may be available through trusted community partners. If you need help finding caregiver support or other community resources, call 864-941-8050.
