I am disappointed and disturbed by recent troubling and bigoted rhetoric in Connecticut politics. Decency and respect are fundamental to public trust and our political system. Yet, a revisionist seeking a seat in our state legislature has launched hateful attacks against people who are our family members, friends, colleagues, and neighbors.
Jadon MacCormack, a young candidate for State Representative in Connecticut’s northeastern corner, attacked the “LGBTQ community” on social media yesterday, alleging that individuals in the community destroy families and corrupt people of all ages.
After widespread condemnation, he not only defended his remarks, but went further today during a radio show appearance, stating that homosexuals and members of the LGBTQ community should “receive the death penalty.”
In America, we have the freedom to love or to hate; we each choose how we use that freedom and how to treat one another. This ugly and deeply misguided rhetoric reflects a complete lack of decency, respect, and humanity.
While these remarks are disturbing and disheartening, I am encouraged to see Democrats and Republicans united in condemning this dangerous mindset.
I hope Jadon comes to better understand the founding principles of this nation — principles we still strive to uphold today: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — rather than embracing a dangerous revisionist ideology.
