Animal Abuse Arrest

⚠️The following information may be upsetting to some readers. The incident involved a puppy, but we are glad to report that the dog is safe and suffered no major injuries.

On Tuesday, officers and Community Service Officers with the Greenfield Police Department responded to the 100 block of El Camino Real for a report of animal abuse.

Witnesses reported observing a male strangling a puppy, punching it, and lifting the animal by its leash.

Officers contacted Salvador Gaeta Jr., 51, of Greenfield, and detained him at the scene.

Officers reviewed video footage, which confirmed the reported abuse had occurred. Gaeta was also found to have several outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Gaeta was taken into custody and transported to the Monterey County Jail, where he was booked for Penal Code 597(a) - Animal Abuse, in addition to his warrants.

The puppy, a male Pit Bull, was evaluated and, fortunately, did not sustain major injuries. Our Community Service Officers took custody of the dog and transported him to the City Kennels, where he is being cared for.

We want to thank the community members who reported this incident.

If you see something suspicious, report it. Our officers will investigate.

Reports can be made through:

• The county's online reporting portal (website pinned on our page)
• Non-emergency dispatch: 831-385-8311
