September is National Preparedness Month, a reminder to take simple steps now to make sure you and your family are ready when an emergency happens.

🎒 One place to start: your emergency kit.

After an emergency, you may need to rely on your own supplies for several days. Make sure your kit includes essentials like:

💧 Water
🥫 Nonperishable food
🔦 Flashlights and extra batteries
🩹 First aid supplies
💊 Necessary medications
📱 Phone chargers and a backup battery
🐾 Supplies for pets and other household needs

Keep everything together in an easy-to-carry container and check your kit regularly to replace expired items.

Find the full checklist at Ready.gov/kit.

After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for several days. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

September is National Preparedness Month, and this year’s theme is Americans Stand Ready.

Emergencies and disasters can happen with little warning, from severe storms and flooding to power outages and other unexpected events. Taking a few simple steps now can help you protect yourself, your loved ones and your community when an emergency happens.

This month, take time to strengthen your household’s preparedness:

🏠 Make a plan: Know how your family will communicate, where you’ll meet and where you would go if you needed to leave home.

📱 Stay informed: Sign up for local emergency alerts and make sure you have multiple ways to receive important updates and weather warnings.

🎒 Build an emergency kit: Gather essentials like water, nonperishable food, medications, first aid supplies, flashlights, batteries and other items your household may need.

🐾 Plan for everyone: Include pets, children, older adults and family members who may need additional assistance in your emergency plans.

🚗 Know where to go: Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and identify a safe place you could go if you needed to leave your home.

Preparedness doesn’t have to happen all at once. Taking a few small steps today can make a big difference when you need them most.

🏗️ A long-awaited project is moving forward in Cairo!

The Town of Cairo will host a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, September 15, marking the next step in transforming the former dojo at 7485 State Route 32 into a brand-new senior center.

Plans for the new center include a commercial kitchen that would serve as the central cooking site for Greene County’s congregate and homebound meal programs, while creating a welcoming new hub for local seniors.

The Cairo Senior Center is anticipated to open by December 2027. We’re excited to see shovels hit the ground and this important community project take shape!

Please RSVP by September 8

For more than 70 years, the Greene County Youth Fair has brought the community together each July with free admission, family-friendly entertainment, and a celebration of the next generation carrying on the county's rich agricultural traditions.

To help preserve this longstanding event, the Greene County Legislature contributed $40,000 in 2026 to the Greene County Agricultural Society to support fair operating costs. This investment helps ensure the Greene County Youth Fair remains a treasured community tradition and the last free fair in New York State. The fairgrounds have also benefited from county support, including a previous $25,000 allocation from the Greene County Legislature for improvements to the Butler Building.
