Today, Great Falls Public Schools held its annual Back-to-School Convocation, and some very powerful messages were delivered to the incredible people who make our schools work; teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, food service workers, administrators, and support staff.

Our community is incredibly fortunate to have such amazing educators and support staff. Every position within our GF schools matters, and one simply cannot be successful without the others working together as a team.

To all of our GFPS staff: have a great school year! Know that our community appreciates you, supports you, and is grateful for the work you do every single day.

And to our parents and community: please remember to give our school staff grace, support, and respect. Our educators are there to educate and support your children. They cannot, and should not be expected, to raise them.

When schools, families, and our community work together, our kids are the ones who win.

I am proud that our City Commission has directed additional funding to create another code-compliance position. One person (as it currently is) simply cannot adequately oversee code compliance across our entire city.

Great Falls deserves neighborhoods where people take pride in their properties and are good neighbors. While the city certainly does not expect perfection, we do expect property owners to maintain their properties in a reasonably clean and orderly manner based on City Code.

Unfortunately, I have seen some properties with excessive trash, excessively tall grass/weeds, abandoned vehicles, garbage and other conditions that are simply unacceptable. When property owners refuse to address those issues, the city has a responsibility to take action.

I also appreciate the work underway to improve how complaints are received, tracked and communicated with residents. Greater transparency and accountability will help everyone understand the process and, hopefully, get problems resolved more efficiently.

Being a good neighbor should be the first step. When that doesn’t happen, code enforcement needs to be there to make sure our neighborhoods remain safe, clean and livable.

Unfortunately, there has been misinformation circulating about the proposed mayor and commissioner stipends included in the upcoming City budget, and I want to set the record straight.

I’ve seen claims that this proposal was never publicly discussed before appearing in the proposed budget. That is simply not accurate.

The topic was discussed during a public work session and again during our annual Commission retreat. No vote was taken at those meetings because that isn’t how the budget process works. Proposals are brought forward as part of the proposed budget, followed by public hearings, discussion, possible amendments, and ultimately a vote by the Commission.

As many of you know, I brought forward the proposal to review mayor and commissioner stipends because they have not been adjusted since 1989. I’ve also shared before that, after taxes and my monthly health insurance contribution to the City, I actually write the City a check for $101 every month to serve as your Mayor. Nobody seeks public office to get rich, but I do believe those willing to serve their community should at least be able to break even.

Reasonable people can disagree on whether the stipends should be increased, and I respect those differing opinions. That’s exactly why we have a public budget process. What we should all agree on, however, is that the discussion should be based on facts, not misinformation.

I will always support an open, transparent process and will continue correcting the record whenever inaccurate information is shared. Our community deserves honest, factual information so they can make informed opinions.

Friendly reminder to everyone planning to attend this Tuesday’s City Commission meeting regarding the Little Shell Tribe housing development annexation.

I know this is an issue that many people feel strongly about, both for and against. We welcome your input and encourage you to make your voice heard, but please remember our chamber rules of decorum, which I enforce consistently.

Please refrain from booing, clapping, cheering, groaning, or engaging in side conversations during the meeting. Everyone deserves the opportunity to speak without interruption or judgement.

Public comment time limits will also be strictly followed. Please do not ask me for additional time, as I do not extend the allotted speaking time.

Your City Commission values public participation, and we appreciate hearing from our community. If someone before you has already made the point you wanted to make, you’re always welcome to simply say, “I concur with the previous speaker,” and your agreement will be noted.

Today, I had the distinct honor of delivering the keynote address as we officially welcomed Janicki to Great Falls and celebrated the groundbreaking of their new facility. It was truly a monumental day for our community and a glimpse into an exciting future.

As a special gesture of appreciation, Janicki presented this beautiful buffalo sculpture to me as Mayor, but more importantly, it is a gift to the people of Great Falls. My hope is to have it displayed inside the Civic Center where residents and visitors can enjoy it for years to come.

Thank you, Janicki, for believing in Great Falls and investing in our community. We are incredibly grateful for your partnership, excited about the opportunities ahead, and can’t wait to build the future together. The best is yet to come!

There is so much exciting progress happening in Great Falls right now, but with growth also comes difficult decisions for your elected officials.

One of those decisions is the Little Shell Tribe’s request for annexation to help provide much-needed housing. I know there are neighbors who have concerns, and I respect their right to share them. Your City Commission is committed to listening carefully to all public comment.

At the same time, we have a legal and ethical responsibility to make decisions based on the law, the facts, and the standards established in our ordinances, not on personal opinions, assumptions, prejudice, or discrimination. Fair housing laws exist to ensure that all applicants are treated equally, and our duty is to apply those laws consistently to every development proposal that comes before us.

I’ve received several phone calls asking me to deny this project. I respect those viewpoints, but so far, I have not been presented with legal or factual reasons that would justify denying the application under the standards we are required to follow. Personal disagreement alone is not a lawful basis for denial.

I encourage everyone who wishes to participate in this process to do so respectfully and to focus on facts, evidence, infrastructure impacts, traffic, public safety, and other relevant planning considerations. Thoughtful public input helps us make better decisions, and every voice deserves to be heard.

Great Falls has always been strongest when we uphold the rule of law, treat people fairly, and work together to address the challenges that come with growth.
