Let's make Grand Rapids shine! ☀️☀️☀️
Join me and hundreds of others to be part of a citywide community cleanup happening across Grand Rapids on May 1 & May 2.

From downtown to neighborhoods across the city, this is a chance to build community, take pride in our city, and make a visible impact-together. Plus, volunteers can enjoy a Friday happy hour at Studio Park and Saturday activities at John Ball Park as a thank-you.

The Kent County Prosecutor has concluded his review and reached a decision not to file criminal charges in the shooting of Da'quain Johnson. I respect the independence of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Michigan State Police investigation, but I also recognize that this news is deeply painful for many in our community.

The loss of Mr. Johnson remains a profound tragedy, and I continue to mourn alongside his family. My commitment to transparency and the highest professional standards does not end with this decision. I will continue to evaluate our policies and practices to ensure the safety of all as I remain acutely aware of the dangerous nature of police work and the split-second decisions officers must make in the interest of public safety. I appreciate the ongoing professionalism shown by our officers as we navigate this period of healing together.

As with any incident of this magnitude, the City of Grand Rapids is committed to the highest degree of transparency possible, consistent with preserving the integrity of the ongoing investigations by the Michigan State Police and the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office.

Any loss of life is a profound tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and mourn this loss alongside our community.

The safety of our residents remains our foremost responsibility. While the work of our police officers is essential to public safety, it must always be subject to rigorous oversight and held to the highest professional standards.

The City is partnering with The Wisdom Center throughout the month of March to provide mental health resources for members of the community that may need additional support due to this incident. Information on how to take advantage of that resource will be forthcoming.

Black History Month is about honoring the achievements, struggles, and contributions of Black people to our communities. Let’s all honor that by continuing to dream, resist, and love our way towards a more inclusive and just City.

There’s a lot happening right now around Justice and Policing, and many people are carrying real questions, concerns, and hopes for better. Mayor’s Mondays this February are a space to come together, listen, and talk about where we are and where we want to go, including a Know Your Rights session on 2/9.

All are welcome. Mondays, 5:30–7pm.
