25 years ago today, I was teaching high school in Chicago. One thing that has stuck with me all these years was the silence. Like most of the city, I lived on a flight path for O’Hare. You get used to so many sounds living in a big city and the absence of airplane traffic served as a persistent reminder, even so far from Towers & the Pentagon, of the moment we were in. 💔🗽

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the families that are forever impacted. We are grateful for the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call, and for the local heroes who continue to serve our communities every day.

THANK YOU to everyone who came to the Special Education Forum last night! Helping our students with disabilities is fundamental to the overall quality of education in Michigan and an important conversation to have.
This forum was a great opportunity to share my experience and goals for improving equity in education, ensuring that all students have the resources they need to thrive.

As an educator of 20 years, access to quality public education is a priority for me in the State House, and I look forward to continuing this work in the State Senate.

A big shoutout and thank you to KConnect; Michigan Parent Advocate & Attorney Coalition (MiPAAC); First Steps Kent; Parents for Education, Power, Purpose and Action (P.E.P.P.A); and Michigan’s Children for hosting this event!

Happy Labor Day!

Organized labor is the backbone of Michigan and Labor Day is a great opportunity to celebrate and remember the many important victories of labor unions.

So as you fire up the grill today, don’t forget that without organized labor, we would not have the protections we all benefit from; 40 hour work week, minimum wage, unemployment benefits, workplace safety, and so much more.

Thank you to the Michigan Pipe Trades Association for inviting me to speak at your quarterly meeting to kick off the holiday! I appreciate the opportunity to connect directly with members and hear, firsthand, about the strength of skilled labor across Michigan.

As your State Rep, I am proud to stand in solidarity with all my labor brothers and sisters. Together we repealed right to work, restored prevailing wage, and expanded unemployment benefits.

The strength of the middle class is directly tied to workers rights and I look forward to the opportunity to continue fighting for workers rights in the State Senate.

Happy (belated) first birthday Hugo the Pygmy Hippo! Yesterday was my first ever hippo pickle party and it was a blast.

John Ball Zoo is one of the top zoos in the nation for conservation efforts. As your State Rep. I’m proud to have secured $14M in support of the amazing work they do. Part of that funding helped build the habitat Hugo and his mom Penelope call home today. It is truly a unique opportunity to have access to such a wonderful zoo here in the heart of the city. As your State Senator, I will continue to bring meaningful investments to our community.

Happy Women’s Equality Day! I am honored to stand on the shoulders of the strong women who fought for our rights. Earlier this year, I had the chance to meet with women traveling the country in remembrance of the original suffragettes. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history of the movement and the work to be done.

Hard to believe that after 126 years women’s right to vote is once again under attack. But Michigan is ready to fight. Today, I co-sponsored legislation that codifies a woman’s right to vote in Michigan law. I’m proud of the legislation we’ve passed in Michigan to protect women’s rights and look forward to finishing the job!
