The next few days in our area are predicted to be brutally hot and humid. Take the proper steps to ensure that everyone stays cool and healthy.

What is the most important thing you can do?

HYDRATE!!!

Be sure to drink plenty of water consistently across the day. Drink before you are thirsty. Make sure children and babies are drinking enough. Have fresh, clean water available for pets.

Just a reminder that Elfinwild Fire Company and Shaler Fire Police are running a joint hydration drive! Emergencies don’t care about the weather, and our volunteers suit up in heavy, impermeable gear that traps heat and prevents sweat evaporation. With the added stresses of heat from a fire and the physical exertion of hauling heavy equipment, dangerous dehydration can occur rapidly.

Please help keep our first responders safe! You can drop off a case of water or non-carbonated electrolyte beverage at Elfinwild Volunteer Fire Company at the back of the building- please message us so that we can collect it. Thank you!!!!

Allegheny County said a "code red" heat advisory has been issued for Thursday as temperatures are expected to reach close to or above 90 degrees.

A hot car is no place for our furry friends.

Even with the windows cracked, a vehicle's interior temperature can rise quickly. Keep your pets safe as the weather heats up!

Here's a reminder of some of the Pennsylvania laws put in place to protect pets in warm weather, including the Hot Car Law.

On July 5, 2010, Paul Miller- a 21-year old senior at East Stroudsburg University with plans to become a police officer- was killed instantly in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer driven by a distracted driver.

On June 5, 2026 enforcement of Paul Miller’s Law began. This law prohibits the use of handheld electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle.

Many responses have been positive.

Many have not.

— “This is just another excuse to stop drivers.” (It’s not an excuse, it’s a reason)
— “Does this include the police??” (Yes)
— “What about people eating/putting on makeup/letting their dog sit in their lap while driving?” (Other forms of distraction may not be specifically prohibited, but can be just as dangerous- and can be cited)
— “Seems like addressing drunk driving/speeding/running red lights is also important.” (Yes)
— “What about using GPS?” (Devices can be used with voice activation or a single touch to activate a function)
— “This is just a money grab.” (The fine for the first offense is $50)

This isn’t about taking something from you- it’s about giving something to others. It’s about giving another person the chance to go home safely. It’s about giving a family the chance to live without knowing the grief of the unexpected, tragic, and entirely preventable death of a loved one.

Paul Miller was a son.
He was a brother.
He was a friend.
He was loved.
And he deserved to go home to his family.

Please put your electronic devices down while you are driving. The life you save may be your own- or that of someone else’s child.
