Whatever draws you to the natural world: the bugle of an elk, the howl of a wild wolf, the sparkling dazzle of a night sky, the tug of a trout at the end of your line, or the piercing scream of a Black Hawk gliding high in the sky above - it's here.

Have to agree with Ed Abbey here, this is a great quote from the man.

Throwback Thursday: Check out this Edward Abbey interview from HCN's Dec. 31, 1976 issue. His words are still salient today. Enjoy this wonderful world.

It just got easier to support a worthy cause that helps Gila wildlife.

The weather is perfect, amazing flowers are blooming, time to head out to the woods and go camping... just stay in the high countrry, don't plan any river crossings yet.

Here is some amazing footage of the helicopter rescue of the Gila Campers last weekend. Although we would never condone anyone putting themselves in the position of getting their tent stolen by the river and requiring a helicopter rescue, it really is remarkable video of the spectacular Gila Wilderness. We especially enjoyed the birds' eye view of the rocks and raging river from the helicopter.

This is very sad for our community.

This is very sad for our community.

Back in the 1930s, the CCC built a unique hanging walkway trail above Whitewater Creek in a slot canyon that followed the path of an old pipeline. The Catwalk Trail suffered damage from significant flash floods in the past, but repairs kept it fully functional for many decades-- until this past weekend. Unfortunately, it was completely destroyed by a massive flash flood that also damaged infrastructure in the immediate area.

To clear up any misconceptions: No houses were lost in the Hot Springs. Some non-permanent structures washed away, but all houses are dry.

SILVER CITY >> Unprecedented flooding of the Gila River has washed away at least two homes from the Gila Hot Springs area, witnesses said, and caused road damage and flooding in Glenwood and Mogollon, and the river is the fourth highest since data was first recorded back in 1928.

The news from Gila Hot Springs:The most important thing is that Everybody Is OK. There is some property damage, as you would expect in the floodplain when the river goes from its normal 150 cfs this time of year to an astonishing almost 30,000 cfs. Our thoughts are with our neighbors here and in Glenwood, where the flooding has been much worse.

Please don't go out near the river - there is massive flooding (worse than tuesday). Staay saffe and enjoy the river from a safe distance for now until it's back to a more normal range. Gila Hot Springs got innundated today, Hwy 15 is temporarily closed North of the village. If you're in Gila or Cliff, watch out tomorrow!
