On this day, June 8th, 1789, James Madison introduced twelve amendments to the Constitution in the First Congress, ten of which became the Bill of Rights to secure freedoms like speech, religion, assembly, arms, and due process against federal power. This proposal addressed Anti-Federalist concerns that the original document lacked explicit protections for individuals and states. It was a critical compromise that strengthened the young republic's commitment to liberty and limited government.

The Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania highlights these liberty protections, critiquing modern rights erosion through surveillance, gun control, and emergency powers that undermine the amendments' intent. We believe the Bill of Rights must be vigorously defended against creeping authoritarianism. Let's recommit to these guarantees to restrain government overreach and restore the founders' vision.
