Honoring Juneteenth. Today, A Walk in the Woods reflects on the true meaning of freedom, community resilience, and equality. We are proud to operate in East Tennessee, a region rich in history. Right here in Sevier County's historic lineage lies the roots of the Highlander Center, which began its foundational work in educational empowerment, leadership, and community-building decades ago. Just as history has been shaped by the people of these mountains, our natural world is shaped by those who protect it. Nature has long provided a sanctuary for reflection and healing. We believe the beauty of our outdoor spaces should be accessible, safe, and welcoming to everyone. We are open today and invite you to spend time reflecting, connecting, and enjoying the peace of the woods with us.

People want to mow and spray it because they don’t understand. We need to educate them.

I WASN’T A PAINTED ROCK IN YOUR YARD.
WHEN YOUR GAME ENDED, I STILL HAD TO WEAR IT.

I am an eastern box turtle.

My shell is a living, growing part of my body.

Paint can interfere with its growth and health.

Bright colors can erase the camouflage that keeps me hidden from predators.

Do not scrub me.
Do not scrape the shell.
Do not use acetone, paint thinner, or nail-polish remover.

Take photographs.
Record the exact location.
Keep pets and people away.
Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife veterinarian, animal control, or your state wildlife agency.

Your picture took minutes.

My body may be forced to carry it for years.

Join us for an evening of bluegrass music and storytelling with the Mountain Edge Band on Friday, June 19, at 7 p.m. at the Cosby Campground Amphitheater as part of the "Celebrating Cosby" community programs! Discover the people, places, and past that make Cosby a special part of the Smokies!

Step back in time with us this summer and immerse yourself in the music and stories of Cosby. These programs honor the rich cultural and natural history of the Cosby area through storytelling, dance, music, and history talks.

These programs are free of charge, and will be held at the Cosby Campground Amphitheater. In case of rain, we'll move to the covered picnic pavilion adjacent to the campground. Feel free to grab a seat in the amphitheater or bring your own chairs or blankets.

Join us for Cherokee Storytelling and Dance on June 26 and Moonshiners on July 10.
