I recently shared my opinion about the overpayments to the Lake County Sheriff. Sheriff Martinez told me to “check the facts!” The fact is that proficiency pay, longevity pay, and clothing allowance pay is for merit officers only. The sheriff is an elected official and is not entitled to receive those benefits. The moment that he became the elected sheriff, he ceased to be a merit officer covered under the officers collective bargaining agreement. As a former Lake County merit officer myself and all of the other merit officers worked hard and earn those benifits and spent months in negotiations with the county council to negotiations those benifits. Therefore, I agree with the findings of the State Board of Accounts and the decision of the Lake County Council.
