Happy holidays! 😃🎉
What Musk is saying is very much possible; in fact it could have been possible for decades and decades, we just never designed society that way. Now, Elon Musk has suggested that future advances in artificial intelligence and robotics could one day eliminate poverty and reduce the need for personal savings. In a recent post on X, he predicted the emergence of what he calls a “universal high income,” arguing that AI-driven abundance could eventually make traditional work optional.
Musk made the remarks while responding to investor Ray Dalio during a discussion about creating new savings accounts for young Americans. While he described those initiatives as well intentioned, Musk stated his longer-term view that rapidly advancing technology could fundamentally reshape how society understands income, work, and financial security. He has also questioned how people might find purpose and meaning in a world where machines perform most jobs.
Like Musk or not, these are important questions and ones we have to be asking. We've been pointing out the need for whole system redesign for 16 years. We have had the potential to do it for a very long time already, but only now is it being spoken about on a larger scale. My belief is that if the average citizen doesn't begin engaging in thought and dialogue about how a new system could look, we may end up with an elitist created one.
