Another good one for my podcast heads out there. My very first job when I was getting settled in Gainesville was at a local grocery store. It's a tough industry, with thin profit margins and a workforce that is too often denied basic benefits and deserved dignities.

In this moment in our economy where so many of us are getting sticker shock every time we walk through the checkout line, a reminder of the tribulations of the folks who are on the other side of the experience as well.

On Point news analyst Jack Beatty talks to author Ann Larson about her new book "Clean Up on Aisle Five”; the realities of grocery store workers, their place in our society and economy and what it says about the need for dignity in essential labor.

Congratulations Gainesville City Commissioner Casey Willits on your recent re-election and thank you for your endorsement for my campaign for state Senate. I look forward to working with you to make sure that Gainesville and Alachua County get better representation in our state capitol.

Jason has issued this stark warning to voters:

“Unless we send different representation to Tallahassee, I’ll bet my bottom dollar that we will see, in the very next legislative session, a bill that preempts our local communities’ ability to say ‘no’ to these data centers. With the election behind them and their corporate donors calling to collect, these corrupt politicians will sell us out yet again to private interests. And our communities will be left with the consequences. Vote for new representation this November, people who will stand up to the industry rather than bending the knee.”

There’s an age-old saying in politics: follow the money.  As detailed in the Substack Seeking Rents , the data center industry is investing heavily in Florida politics this election cycle.  Jason’s opponent, State Senator Jennifer Bradley, who is also Chair of the Senate’s

A good overview of the results from our recent primaries and a preview of the races we'll see on the ballot in November. AND...Senator Bradley acknowledges publicly that she has an opponent for the first time:

Bradley:
“I’m not going to go tit for tat on my opponent’s allegations about my contribution record,” Bradley said. “My contribution records are transparent. I am not motivated by any contribution that is received or not.”

Which begs the question, then why are they writing her checks for $5,000, $10,000, & $20,000 at a time? See for yourself:

Then ask yourself, who is Jennifer Bradley truly representing?

Florida’s 2026 primary election results are in, with just over 25% of Florida’s registered voters turning out to vote in Aug. 18’s election.Because Florida is a closed primary state, only registered members of political parties could vote in the primary election. The state has about 5.6 millio...

This is not the immigration reform that was promised. Terrorizing an upstanding young man and his family. And this is also not an exception. This same sad drama is playing out in communities throughout our state and our country and it needs to end. Please read the full article. Then ask yourself if this is a Florida and United States that makes you proud.

I'm honored to have the support of Dr. Paul Ortiz and his wife Sheila Payne for my campaign.

Paul was Chair of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida and also served as President of United Faculty of Florida at UF.

He and Sheila could always be counted on to show up for working people in this community. They are dearly missed but still with us in spirit.

Thank you for your support, Paul and Sheila!

My wife has family in Gary who went for weeks without power and brought this issue to my awareness. It has not gotten nearly enough media attention.

I'm truly hoping that Florida gets lucky with another light storm season this year as I do not trust that the state or federal government will fully have our backs this year if not.

Hardening our grid infrastructure would have been a much better use of hundreds of millions of dollars of state emergency funds than "Alligator Alcatraz."

Please check out our campaign's energy policy (https://www.takingbackflorida.org/energy-policy) for a better way forward for Florida and help make sure our communities don't go the way of our brothers and sisters in Gary.
