The Kings River Fisheries Management Program is calling for volunteers to assist with weekend care of trout fry!

From May 9 through June 7, the Kings River Fisheries Management Program will rear a round of rainbow trout for release into the lower Kings River in the incubator facility below Pine Flat Dam. During this time, we need volunteers to assist this weekend.

Before our Flood Operations & Maintenance team begins any work along the river; our environmental team conducts surveys to check for active nests and other sensitive species in project areas. If any are found, we set up protective buffer zones or adjust the timing of work to avoid disturbance. In April, we completed surveys for sediment removal along the Kings River levee system and removal of debris and excessive fire fuel vegetation. These surveys help ensure flood control efforts move forward while protecting the local wildlife.

Pawan has been an incredible asset to the District since joining KRCD 5 years ago. His leadership and management of the Jeff L. Update from Kings River Water Association on our recent blog post, read to learn how the kings watershed snowpack is already turning to river flow.

Snow is in short supply around the Kings River watershed this spring with far below average snowpack when conditions should be at their peak. Despite decent precipitation in the early winter months, a record setting dry and hot March, with zero precipitation in the region, left the snowpack in ruins. Those were the findings of April 1 measurements taken by the Kings River Water Association (KRWA) and other California Cooperative Snow Survey partners in the mountains of eastern Fresno and Tulare counties.

Kings River Fisheries Management Program is looking for volunteers for a release of rainbow trout fry into various points along the Kings River on Thursday, April 16. Once trout fry are ready for release (approximately 1″ – 1.5″ long) we rely on volunteers to help us stock them into the river between the Army Corps of Engineers Bridge and Avocado Lake Park. Volunteers should be able to transport 2-3 five-gallon buckets of trout fry in unheated personal vehicles (trucks preferable) and should be able to carry a 20-pound bucket over uneven terrain.
