📢 Last night in Haddonfield, the room was packed with people standing up to denounce the commissioners’ push to criminalize homelessness. Even some of our members were there to voice their collective anger. 😡 These were just some of the important statements that were stated over the course of a 5+ hour meeting.
💰 It is cheaper to house an unsheltered person than to put them in jail. $12,000 VS $80,000
🚽 Nearest public bathroom is 2 miles away in Cherry Hill.
📉Dedicating adequate funding and supporting programs does work to lower the rate of homelessness.
People didn’t just show up with their voices. They showed up with facts, with statistics, and with the truth. Now we all need to continue to strengthen the voice of the people to tell Haddonfield “WE WILL NOT SUPPORT THIS”.
This fight is far from over.
🚨Next steps concerned citizens can take🚨
You can gather family and friends to pack every commissioners meeting until this ordinance is dead. 😵
Call, email, and write letters to all three commissioners—make it impossible for them to ignore public opposition. ☎️
Submit letters to the editor so the broader community sees pushback against criminalizing homelessness. 📝
Yard signs, posters in shop windows, and even petitions circulating at community events. Encourage Haddonfield residents to show their neighbors they care. 💙
Demand funding for social services, mental health resources, and housing support instead of punishment. ❤️🩹🏡
All of these things can be done alone or with allies. Most importantly, it’s effective action.
💪🏻💪🏼💪🏽💪🏾💪🏿
The message to the community should be:
This isn’t about politics. It’s about deciding whether Haddonfield is a town that punishes people for being poor, or a town that chooses compassion. Being unhoused does not strip a person of their humanity. What strips us of our humanity is when we stop recognizing theirs. 🫂
