Some really helpful updates below and an additional note that tomorrow’s scheduled Council meeting has been canceled and items will shift to the next scheduled meeting on February 10th.

A special thanks to our dedicated city crews who have been out working around the clock to clear the streets and keep Fredericksburg safe and moving. Chipping my own way through the ice today, I loved seeing so many neighbors out, lending a hand clearing sidewalks with the kids sledding and playing.

It’s moments like these that really show the heart of our community. ❄️💙

𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 - 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲

The City continues to respond to winter weather impacts and provides the following update on road conditions, facilities, and safety:

⚠️ 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Thanks to the sunshine and ongoing treatment efforts, Priority 1 roads are in good condition. City crews continue cutting back snow and cleaning intersections. As temperatures drop this evening, refreezing is likely, and residents should remain alert for frozen pavement and black ice. Please continue to stay off the roads overnight and into early morning to support our crews’ snow removal efforts.

Public Works crews have actively plowed and treated Priority 2, secondary, and neighborhood roads throughout the day, with operations continuing tonight and into the morning. Crews will make repeated passes on Priority 1 and Priority 2 roads through the evening and early morning hours. With temperatures expected to remain below freezing for several days, salt and treatment will be applied as conditions allow.

🚗 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀, 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀
All City property parking lots have been cleared. Earlier efforts focused on downtown and City facilities in coordination with Public Facilities crews. Parks staff have revisited trails today; however, smaller trail bridges that cannot accommodate equipment remain snow-covered. The library area has been cleared and will receive additional attention in the morning.

🏢 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀
Public Facilities crews, working alongside Parks & Recreation, have begun clearing access to all City facilities. These efforts will continue through the night and into the morning.

Public Works and Parks crews continue winter storm operations using a combination of City equipment and contractor support. Equipment in service includes plow trucks, tractors with plows and buckets, RTVs with plows, a compact tractor with a rotary brush, salt spreaders, and snow blowers. To date, City crews have used 329 tons of rock salt and 5,000 gallons of brine applied pre-storm, with replacement orders placed for additional brine and 350 tons of salt.

𝐒𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝟐𝟒-𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲. Additionally, the City’s contractor is assisting City crews with seven pieces of equipment and additional operators, focusing on Priority 1 roads.

🦺 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿
Police, Fire, and Rescue services have remained fully operational and have continued responding to calls as normal throughout the storm, with no storm-related injuries or power outages reported.

Residents are urged to continue using caution, particularly this evening and overnight, due to refreezing conditions and the potential for black ice. Please limit travel when possible and allow crews room to operate safely.

Additional updates will be shared as conditions change. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through the City’s website, social media channels, and emergency alert system.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

I was honored to spend the morning at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast, surrounded by neighbors and leaders committed to justice and equity. Thank you to the Fredericksburg NAACP for the event and for your tireless work. I am proud to be part of a community committed to building a city where every person is seen, heard, and valued.

I appreciate News Talk 1230 WFVA for correcting “Inform Fredericksburg’s” (Matt Kelly and Rick Pullen’s) latest false statements about another city leader. The pair has continued their pattern of attacking people’s ethics and threatening their livelihood, just as they did to me this summer. This kind of behavior disrespects Fredericksburg and undermines those working in good faith to serve our community.

Yesterday morning, on Ted Schubel's Town Talk radio show, Matt Kelly and Rick Pullen of “Inform Fredericksburg” made a baseless and false allegation about me. They falsely claimed that I used my position as a professor to influence students’ votes in last November’s election, and that the University has an open investigation of me on this matter.

Let me be clear. This allegation is completely made up. The University reconfirmed to me again yesterday afternoon that they know of no such accusation against me, and that there has never been a formal investigation. Mr. Schubel has issued a correction and an apology for allowing it to be said on his talk show.

I believe that throughout my entire career I have established a reputation as honest, open, ethical, accessible, and responsive. Unfortunately, others do not believe in those virtues. These baseless attacks on my professional integrity need to stop now.

Happy New Year, Fredericksburg! Thank you to Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation & Events for an awesome first day hike at Mott’s Run. The trails were so popular, they were running low on maps but don’t worry, there was plenty of hot chocolate to go around.

☀️This win is a vote of confidence in collaborative leadership, thoughtful planning, and a belief in a brighter future. I am honored and excited to continue serving as the Ward 3 City Councilor and to keep fighting for the values we share.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who supported this campaign and also me personally. I am grateful to new friends who opened their doors to me, volunteers who wrote postcards and stuck stamps, and to all the neighbors who shared their FXBG stories and hopes for our future.

I want to especially acknowledge my opponent, Mr. Matt Kelly, for his many years of service to the Fredericksburg City Council. I have sincere respect for his commitment to our City and his contributions.

This campaign season included disagreement but showcased the passion and importance of local government. The candidates’ efforts to engage and connect drove an incredibly high and informed voter turnout, which is a testament to everyone’s work and the strength of our democratic process.

But now the work begins! Together, we will build a Fredericksburg where our neighborhoods and families thrive, where progress happens in balance with preservation, and where every voice is heard.

To everyone who believed in a stronger, more positive Fredericksburg, I say thank you.

With deep appreciation,
Susanna

🎃 Happy Halloween! 👻

I’ve always loved how trick-or-treating gives everyone a chance to appreciate what makes a neighborhoods so special. Vibrant neighborhoods are walkable with safe sidewalks, friendly neighbors, and diverse housing that come together to create a welcoming community for everyone.

Fredericksburg’s mix of homes close to parks, shops, and each other makes this night full of fun and connection for kids and adults. It’s a great reminder of why our Fredericksburg neighborhoods are such amazing places to live and grow and why I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Enjoy the night and thanks for helping make our community so wonderful!

☀️Housing Policy Progress Alert!☀️

The City regularly creates a legislative priority request for the State General Assembly. Yesterday Council finalized the request and I’m proud to share that I added a new item to the list — to allow Fredericksburg to join the other localities enabled to develop an Affordable Dwelling Unit ordinance.

Housing policy has always been a top priority for me, and this step is about giving Fredericksburg more local control to address housing needs directly. We’ve long discussed this as a potential tool to support affordable housing in many housing plans over the past 20 years, but have never taken action. That changes now!

I’m proud to initiate this real progress on expanding housing options to support the members of our community who live and work here and struggle with affordability. From retail workers, to teachers, to public safety personnel, this is a challenge for so many.

If elected, I hope to be able to guide this initiative over the next four years.

Tonight, City Council voted to use reserve City funds to provide emergency support for the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank. This funding will help the 2,200 City households experiencing delays to their SNAP benefits, as well as families of federal workers who are furloughed or working without pay during the government shutdown. Thanks to this additional support, there will be more pop-up food distribution events available across the City in the coming days.

This is why local government matters, because in times of crisis, we can act quickly and compassionately to take care for all our residents.

If you’re able, please consider donating or volunteering with the foodbank.

Uniting the Central Rappahannock River Region in our commitment to fight hunger.
