We are always happy to talk about all the fantastic resources and opportunities that our office has to support agriculture here in Frederick County!🚜🐮

Last week, Shannon had the pleasure to talk to the LSU Agricultural Leadership class at Orlowski Farm in Knoxville. She was joined by Ben and Kate Sowers of South Mountain Creamery, Big Cork Vineyards, and Tim and Gail Pry of Needwood Farms in Burkittsville. The beautiful Orlowski farm overlooks South Mountain, with views stretching into Virginia and West Virginia. It was the perfect backdrop to discuss the many challenges and opportunities facing agriculture today.

Jenna’s recent LEAD MD XIV session took her class to Garrett County, where they gained firsthand insight into the industries, natural resources, and land uses that help shape Western Maryland.

Throughout the seminar, the group explored the region’s forest industry, learning about sustainable forest management and the important role forestry plays in supporting local economies. They also visited a maple syrup operation to learn why Garrett County is known for producing some of Maryland’s finest maple syrup and toured a produce farm utilizing high tunnel systems to extend growing seasons and improve crop production.

The experience offered valuable perspectives on the balance between agriculture, forestry, conservation, recreation, and economic development, highlighting the opportunities and challenges facing Maryland’s rural communities. 🌱🍁
