Hickory Dickory Dock! 🕰️ Earlier this month, IDEM responded to a dangerous mercury spill in Elkhart County from an unexpected source: a grandfather clock.

While the clock was being taken apart, liquid mercury 🌡️ from an old ballast leaked across the kitchen counter and floor. Despite the homeowner’s efforts to clean it up, mercury vapors quickly reached extremely high levels, prompting a coordinated response from IDEM, IDOH, and the U.S. EPA.

IDEM reminds Hoosiers that mercury can hide in older household items such as:
• Old fever thermometers
• Traditional thermostats
• Certain light bulbs and switches
• Older gas appliances, auto parts, and industrial equipment
• Some antiques and novelty items

Even small amounts of mercury release harmful vapors. If you suspect a mercury spill:
• Keep people and pets away.
• Do not vacuum or sweep.
• Call the IDEM Spill Line at (888) 233‑7745 for guidance.

🚨 IMPORTANT EVENT DETAILS: 🚨 Don't even think about showing up early to the recycling center. ⏰ We're closing up shop at 3:30 for General Recycling, and the parking lot is off-limits until the event starts. Don't be that person who tries to sneak in early, parks at Under One Woof, or blocks the street 🚗. Trust us, you'll end up waiting longer than if you just chill and show up during event hours 😴. In fact, 4:00-4:45 is usually the worst time to arrive - so if you are a person who must be early to be on time, pretend the event starts at 5:00! Yes, some of this was written with the help of AI, but all of it is from experience. 🤣

Specific Details for Event:
Each site will have one trailer designated for tire disposal. Tires will be accepted (8 per household) on a first-come, first-served basis. The event will conclude at each location once the trailer reaches capacity. You will then be directed to one of the other sites, if space is available.

What's Accepted:
Passenger car/truck tires and light tires, such as: bicycle, moped, motorcycle, lawn mower, or golf cart tires. Tires on rims are ok.

What's NOT Accepted:
No large tires, such as tractor or semi, and no businesses or out-of-county residents.
