The 549th Military Police Company was constituted on March 15, 1945, and was activated on April 10, 1945, in Hawaii. April 18, 1946, following the conclusion of World War II, the 549th MP CO was inactivated. The company was reactivated on January 15, 1947, as the 549th Military Police Company Canal Zone, Republic of Panama and was later redesignated the 549th Military Police Company and allotted t
o the regular Army. On December 19,1989, the 549th Military Police Company was alerted for Operation Just Cause and served in Task Force Atlantic with the 7th Infantry Division (Light). During Operation Just Cause the company conducted MP missions in Colon, Coco Solo and Rio Hato to secure the Gamboa Dam and Gatun Locks. Following the cessation of hostilities the unit trained the new Panamanian Police and participated in Operation Promote Liberty. For their efforts the company received the Army Superior Unit Award. In September 1995, in accordance with the Panama Canal Treaty, the company closed Fort Davis and relocated to Fort Clayton, Republic of Panama. Later, on December 15, 1998, the company relocated from Fort Clayton, Republic of Panama, to its current location, Fort Stewart, Georgia, under the 3rd Military Police Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized).
