With sadness, I report the passing of a retired FLPD PSA, Robert "Fig" Knutten, age 68, who passed away on June 14th, after just days in a Sebring, FL hospice. Fig recovered from a stroke a few years ago with the help of his dear friend Sandy (also a retired FLPD PSA). Fig suffered from an undiagnosed infection and possibly lymphoma started a cascade of problems from which he could not recover.

With sadness I report the passing of a retired FLPD PSA who had a great sense of humor and taught me much when I entered the crime scene unit.
Robert "Fig" Knutten, age 68, passed away June 14th after just days in a Sebring, FL hospice. Fig and Sandy (also a retired FLPD PSA) divorced years ago but remained the best of friends. With Sandy's help Fig recovered from a stroke a few years ago, but a recent undiagnosed infection and possibly lymphoma started a cascade of problems from which he could not recover.

SUBJECT: Passing of Glen J. Arnal

It is with a heavy heart and our sad duty to announce the unexpected passing of Fire Captain Glen J. Arnal. Glen started his firefighting career with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue on January 10, 1994. He was one of the original SHARC team members now known as the TRT. Please keep Glen and his surviving family in your thoughts and prayers. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming and an update will be sent at that time. Mourning bands are appropriate when wearing dress uniforms until his interment.
Rest in peace, you will never be forgotten.

SUBJECT: Memorial Service for Retired Fire Lieutenant Michael J. Flanagan


It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of retired Fire Lieutenant Michael Joseph Flanagan. Mike died back on January 18, 2016 in Ocala, Florida with his family by his side. Mike’s final request was to have his ashes taken out on the Fort Lauderdale Fireboat and the urn placed in the ocean that he loved and where he spent countless hours working on Fireboat 9 patrolling, making rescues, and extinguishing boat fires.

Mike Flanagan began his career as a firefighter with the City of Fort Lauderdale Fire Department on February 1, 1962. He was part of a group of rookies hired to staff the opening of the new Fort Lauderdale Fire Station 6 (presently station 35). He was promoted to Driver/Engineer on September 22, 1966 and Fire Lieutenant on March 14, 1975. The pension ordinance in place at that time required firefighters to retire at age 50, so Mike reluctantly retired on September 1, 1986.

During his 24 year career Mike worked at every firehouse in the City and saw much growth in the department. Before he retired in 1986 the City had grown and it was necessary to add another six firehouses. He was assigned to operations and as a member of the fire boat crew for the majority of his career, back when the fireboat was staffed full time with a helmsman, fire officer, and a firefighter. Michael J. Flanagan will be missed by the many that knew him…but not forgotten!

Please join us and Mike’s wife Tammy, daughter Kim, son-in-law, retired Fort Lauderdale Fire Lieutenant Joseph Dwyer for a small dockside memorial service at Fire Station 49 on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 10 am. The Fort Lauderdale Firefighters Honor Guard will render honors; Black Pearl Pipes and Drums will play, Senior Fire Chaplain Ron Perkins will give a brief religious ceremony before the family boards the fireboat to complete the private service at sea.
