Maj. Gen. John T. Reim, Commanding General of Picatinny Arsenal and Joint Program Executive Officer for Armaments and Ammunition, presented the inaugural “Key to the Cannon Gates” honorary award to Command Sgt. Maj. (Retired) Larry Taylor during a retirement luncheon in his honor on Tuesday, October 29.
Taylor served as the Supervisory Safety and Occupational Health Manager with DEVCOM’s Weapons and Software Engineering Center, where he significantly advanced safety and occupational health standards for over 3,000 employees across hundreds of facilities at Picatinny Arsenal.
The “Key to the Cannon Gates” Honorary Award, established by Maj. Gen. Reim, is inspired by the iconic Cannon Gates that once served as the historic entry point to Picatinny Arsenal. Dating back to the 1880s, the gates symbolize the rich history, dedication, and tradition of service at Picatinny. The award embodies the values of service, innovation, and collaboration that are central to the Arsenal’s mission and legacy.

This week, West Point cadets walked the historic grounds of Normandy in solemn commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of D-Day. The visit provided a powerful reminder of the immense sacrifices made during Operation Overlord, an extraordinary display of courage, resolve, and selflessness. For our cadets, this served not only as a tribute to the past but also as a poignant reflection on the responsibility they will carry as future leaders of the U.S. Army. Experiences like this are essential to shaping leaders of character, deepening their connection to the Army Values of Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage, and reaffirming their commitment to the enduring principles of Duty, Honor, Country.
