As we say “good bye” to our Outgoing Commander, COL Neff, and “welcome” to our Incoming Commander, COL Matthews, we took some time to ask them a few questions.
COL Neff:
1. What was your favorite part of being the Commander of 16th HC?
“The people. It’s been inspiring to talk to the Soliers in the unit about their journeys bringing them to 16th HC, as well as their plans for where they will go.”
2. What are you doing next, and what are you looking forward to for your next phase of life?
“After this I’m retiring. I’m looking forward to more family time and the slower pace that will follow.”
3. What advice would you give to someone who is just beginning their career in the Army?
“There are so many facets to Army Medicine, take the time to learn them all. Don’t spend your life in one spot, there’s so much to learn and experience. It’s hard to do it all, but it’s rewarding.”
4. If you could do it all over, would you change anything?
“Absolutely! I would be more deliberate with LPD’s, have them more regularly, and work to have more time to get to know the Soliers. With some of the challenges thrown at you in a command position, you feel so alone. Getting together with the Unit more would have been nice. And order bigger coins.”
5. What advice would you give COL Matthews as the incoming commander?
“Start your vision of what the end will look like, and start working towards that goal sooner rather than later. Two years will go fast, and next thing you know, you’re moving on.”
COL Matthews:
1. What are you looking forward to as the incoming commander?
“I’m looking forward to working directly with Soldiers again, and seeing what is to come with this unit.”
2. What is one goal you’d like to see 16th HC accomplish?
“A successful and safe deployment.”
3. What advice would you give someone who is just starting their career in the Army?
“Establish your goals, but give yourself leeway with them. There are so many opportunities in the Army, so seize them when they come your way.”
4. What is a fun fact about yourself you’d like your team to know?
“I played Rugby during Medical School at Tulane University. I have a Black Belt in Taekwondo.”
Notes from COL Matthews: he has a dark sense of humor, and is very sarcastic. Try to pick up on it, he’s very funny.
