April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Flemington Borough Police Department will be conducting grant funded enforcement operations focused on drivers who are using handheld cell phones and other electronic devices behind the wheel.

Distracted driving is not a minor issue. NHTSA says 3,208 people were killed and 315,167 were injured in distracted-driving crashes in 2024, and sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds β€” at 55 mph, that is like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.

Here in New Jersey, official state safety materials note that driver inattention was a major contributing cause in nearly 800,000 motor vehicle crashes from 2012 to 2016. The NJ MVC also warns that 25 percent of all accidents involve drivers who use a cell phone.

Under N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3, using a wireless telephone or electronic communication device while operating a moving motor vehicle on a public road is unlawful unless it is used hands-free, with limited emergency exceptions. The law sets penalties at $200-$400 for a first offense, $400-$600 for a second offense, and $600-$800 for a third or subsequent offense. A third or subsequent offense may also bring 3 motor vehicle points and a possible 90-day license suspension.

Put the phone down. Stay focused. Drive safely.
