We recently had the opportunity to film a powerful video with some incredible men and women in the Black community, speaking out against the gerrymandering and redistricting currently being pushed in Virginia.

It was an honor to sit down with true patriots and give them a platform to share their stories and perspectives. One of those voices is Waverly Washington, who has an incredible story and is currently running for Congress in Virginia’s 7th District.

American History Lesson – February 26, 1870
On February 26, 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels of Mississippi was sworn in as the first Black member of the United States Senate.
Hiram Rhodes Revels was born free in North Carolina in 1827. He became a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, an educator, and a college administrator. Before the Civil War, he lived and voted in Ohio.
During the Reconstruction era, he was elected by the Mississippi legislature to represent Mississippi in the U.S. Senate, serving from 1870 to 1871. He became the first African American to serve in either house of the United States Congress.
A fact many people do not know: the first African American member of the U.S. Senate was a Republican.
