Big news for our department! 🚒

We are incredibly fortunate to announce that the Sangamon Valley Fire Department has received a grant of nearly $14,000 to purchase a specialized gear washer and dryer.

Why is this so critical? Firefighters face significantly higher cancer risks due to the harsh, toxic chemicals encountered during fires. This new equipment is a game-changer, allowing us to properly decontaminate our gear and protect the health of our dedicated volunteers who put themselves at risk for this community.

Our department works hard to ensure every dollar we have is spent wisely to better serve you. In fact, over the last 6 months alone, we’ve secured nearly $45,000 in grant funding! This has allowed us to upgrade our capabilities with new boots, a cardiac monitor, AEDs, and now, this vital cleaning equipment.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to keep our community, and our crew, safe! 👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

We are excited to announce the recipients of the FY-26 Small Equipment Grant. A total of $6 million was awarded to 260 fire departments/districts and EMS providers across the state.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dewey Structure Fire

DEWEY, IL — At roughly 3:38 PM today, SVFPD was dispatched to a fire alarm in the 400 block of Railroad St. Arriving units observed smoke from the eaves and upgraded the incident to a working structure fire. Crews quickly made entry, locating and extinguishing a fire in the main bedroom and master bath.

We are very happy to report that the sole occupant and her dog were able to safely evacuate the home. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff's Office Specialized Investigative Fire Team (SIFT).

We want to extend our sincere gratitude to Cornbelt Fire Protection District, Rantoul Fire Department, Gifford Fire Rescue, Thomasboro Fire, METCAD 9-1-1 - Champaign County, Illinois, Champaign County Sheriff's Office and Arrow Ambulance for their critical assistance today.

A Note on Volunteering:
Fires that occur during the daytime put a heavy strain on volunteer departments, as our members work full-time jobs. We were lucky to have enough personnel available today for a quick knockdown. If you are interested in serving your community as a volunteer responder, please reach out to us!

Safety Tip: Smoke alarms save lives. Ensure you have them placed throughout your home, including inside all bedrooms, to notify you of danger as early as possible.

Today we remember the fallen, brave souls who stood in the face of danger so that liberty might endure.

Their sacrifice was not given in vain. The freedoms we enjoy were purchased at a terrible cost, borne by men and women of uncommon courage and quiet devotion.

Let us live worthy of their memory.

We shall remember them.

⚠️ Dust Storm Warning in Effect ⚠️

We are currently under a dust storm warning. If you can avoid traveling in rural areas, please do so. Visibility can drop quickly and unexpectedly, significantly increasing the risk of vehicle accidents.

If you must be on the road:
• Slow down
• Use your headlights
• Be prepared for sudden low-visibility conditions

Drive carefully and stay alert. Your safety—and the safety of others—depends on it.

3 pm Update:

A Dust Storm Warning has been issued for areas between Decatur and Bloomington until 5 pm. We have been getting several reports of thick dust on parts of state highway 121 near Latham, and satellite data is showing dust plumes extending northeast into south central McLean County.
